In the technology world, the latest advancement is only as good as the next thing coming down the line. The auto industry is constantly bringing us new technologies, whether it be for safety, entertainment, usefulness or simply for pure innovation (Neiger,C.). Unless you 're an inveterate walker or a mass-transit rider, you probably spend more time in your car each week than anywhere except your workplace and your home. It’s not always pleasant. If you believe the hype, it would seem that self-driving cars are right around the corner. Google has been testing them for several years, and states like California and Nevada have authorized them for use on roads – although only with a human behind the wheel. Autonomous-driving features, such as systems that recognize hazards and brake on their own to avoid collisions, are already on the market. But the fantasy of a car that automatically steers you to work while you read the morning paper or catch a few extras is still many years away. "Autonomous driving is not going to mean jump in the car, push a button, say 'Take me to grandma 's house ' and go to sleep, ' " said James Bell, head of consumer affairs for GM. "That may come someday, but not soon."
For decades, most automobile headlights were fairly uncomplicated. They pointed fixedly ahead, with separate high beams for greater visibility on dark roads. Each generation, has given something to humanity, that the majority of us, thought was impossible, and no way is it going to happen. Some people believe that self-driving cars is good for the future and others think it will make us depend on technology too much. In all truth self-driving cars, has a lot of potential and unanswered questions: Google has been demonstrating its driverless technology over the past few years by bringing computerization into what has, for over a hundred years, been solely a human activity (Driving an automobile). It has done this by retrofitting Toyotas, Lexus’s and Nissan with cameras and sensors. “Major car manufactures already market and sell high-end vehicles with features like automated braking self-parking, lane- departure warning, and variable speed cruise control.”(Guerra) there is no doubts about self-driving cars have potential but the technology has serious questions to address. “With the news that driverless cars are coming to our roads, should we be discussing what will happen when the cars has to choose between the safety of its occupant and the safety of the road users.” (Wise) Will the car drive itself off a bridge to avoid an accident? Or run into the side walk to avoid hitting a pedestrian are all the serious questions brought up by people.
Vehicles have now been around more than a hundred years. However, the industry of cars is now on the verge of becoming totally revolutionized. Many automobile brands are currently working on developing and testing autonomous vehicles, better known as self-driving cars. The goal of this project is to completely eliminate human interactions with the vehicle. By this means, 10 million autonomous vehicles are expected to be on the road by 2020 and become mainstream by the year of 2030. However, many feel as if this project has no purpose. In the article, “Will Self-Driving Cars be Good for America” (March 10, 2016), Robert Peterson argues that America is ready for self-driving cars to take over the streets. The author first reports the statistics of car related accidents in America, and how much the damages have cost in all; he then presents all the benefits of autnomous cars by discussing how it will benefit people of all ages by limiting expenses, and being able to reach a destination without the need for a license; and to conclude, he then finishes his article by alerting the audience that they need to get ready for what’s about to happen to the automotive industry in America. Imagine being able to get into your car and simply typing in your desired destination, and then reclining your seat to watch a movie or text a friend. During this time, the car is basically driving itself. Well, soon this may be possible this invention is called an autonomous car. An autonomous car, or driverless/ robotic car, is a car that is designed to drive without human interference. Essentially, drivers can program their destination into the car’s GPS system and then sit back and relax. Some of the world’s largest car companies are currently creating autonomous vehicles, such as Audi, Toyota, Volvo, Mercedes, and countless others. The driverless vehicle is now becoming a clearer and more present reality, and has been discussed and planned for decades. The autonomous vehicle offers significant benefits, but raises many questions and difficulties.

Self-driving cars can also help disabled and elderly people get from place to place on their own. The self-driving cars that are now being developed use many forms of technology to drive themselves. Radar, cameras and other devices are used to "see" the world around the car. Advanced computer systems drive the car from one destination to another without any help from humans. Self-driving cars offer such a wealth of advantages that it makes little difference whether Americans are ready. Americans need to get ready. Self-driving cars will soon be in their rearview mirrors.
Think about getting into your car to go on vacation. You have everything pacted, hop in, and get ready to watch a movie. This is starting to become a reality in the coming years. More and more industries are starting to dump millions of dollars into invoicing a safe, self driving vehicle. However, is this really a positive step with the innovation of transportation.Transportation with technology is evolving with us everyday. Self Driving cars are one of the new forms of technology. Driverless cars are beginning to enter the roadway currently. National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Joan Claybrook, believes that it will take between 10-30 years before driverless cars are good enough to be fully administered on the roadway (Greenhouse).
“Ninety percent of our road accidents are related to bad driving behavior; driving recklessly and speeding under the influence of alcohol, changing lanes without signaling, driving on the hard shoulder and passing through red lights.” -Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Commander in chief of the Dubai Police (Olarte, 2011). The majority of car crashes are caused by human errors, and if this proposition is implemented, the number of fatalities due to car accidents per year will dramatically plummet. In 2012, a Google driverless car had driven over 300,000 miles, with only two accidents being reported, both of which had been a human’s fault (Emerson, 2012). Autonomous cars will have quicker reflexes than humans, make more reliable judgments and will not commit silly mistakes such as texting whilst driving. As a collateral for reducing accidents, this innovation could theoretically also save the government trillions of dollars each year.
Computers are already trusted to keep our cars from slipping and prevent wheels from locking up. Using computers to drive us around is a logical next step to take as the technology matures. As the industry advances, driverless cars will revolutionize life and make travel safer. Drunk driving can be eliminated as computers can take over for intoxicated humans. Elderly people will be able to move about as they please, without special assistance. As these systems become more advanced, and reliable, productivity will increase as less time is spent in traffic jams. According to USA Today, deaths from car accidents cost society nearly 900 billion a year. As driverless cars become more affordable, and better drivers then humans, the annual cost to society will decrease. They are extremely reliant when it comes to creating a safer environment for surrounding pedestrians and drivers. In the UK, it has been reported that the number of crashes or driving caused deaths have decreased by 2,500. These cars have different safety features that emphasize the advancement of technology. There is an FCW (Forward Collision Warning) system, a blind-spot monitoring system, and an LDW (Lane-Departure Warning) system. Each one of the components creates a new level of safety in these vehicles since the car controls itself when presented with anything that triggers these safety features. In regards to gas intake, these cars are also more environmentally friendly than other gas-powered vehicles and save more than 15% gas intake. Soon they will all be electric which saves the environment from the overuse of oil. Each one of these vehicles already has an eco mode or electric mode which contributes to the price. Google has announced that their self-driving cars will be on the road in two to five years. The company hopes that they will in America by 2020 but even if they are not people wonder if they will be safe and if we are ready to share the road with these vehicles.
