Friar Lawrence In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Friar Laurence is responsible for the tragic, but avoidable, death of Romeo and Juliet. He went behind the two feuding families backs and developed a plan that killed the two lovers. To enact the plan, Friar Laurence willingly gave Juliet a vial of poison that helped her fake her death,“ Take thou this vial, being then in bed,/and this distilled liquor drink thou off” (IV.I. 93) and when she would awake from her slumber Romeo was supposed to be at her side, “Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift” (IV.I. 114) but Friar Laurence didn’t get the message to Romeo in time.

Even though some people may see Friar Lawrence’s involvement with the two star-crossed lovers as a way to provide them with the happily ever after they had always wanted, once you look at the facts you will be able to see that he is the reason why they are both dead. Some key events were when Friar married Romeo and Juliet in the first place, he made poor decisions, and he gave Juliet the idea to fake her own death. Friar Lawrence is to blame because he knew that he would face dire consequences if the Capulet’s or Montague’s were to ever find out that he married their enemy’s kids.

He confessed his whole plan and the marriage between Romeo and Juliet. He took responsibility for what he had done when he said, “All this I know; and to the marriage her nurse is privy; and, if aught in this miscarried by my fault, let my old life be sacrificed, some hour before this time, unto the rigour of severest law” (scene 4 act 3). Balthazar did not receive Friars letter so he didn’t know Juliet was alive, while everyone believed that she was dead.

Such as the two constantly going out in secrecy, or even the Nurse encouraging them to continue. This helps play into their deaths. However, there is one main factor that helps to reach the conclusion of their deaths. Friar Lawrence is the main factor and cause for Romeo’s and Juliet’s deaths.
