Courage and selflessness are words that describe heroes. Mundane people can be heroes when they have enough perseverance to do extraordinary tasks. They sacrifice their needs for others. A hero, as defined in Webster’s Online Dictionary, is a person who “a person admired for achievements or noble qualities” or “one who shows great courage.” However, a hero is not just a person with outstanding achievements. A hero is a person who is philanthropic, generous, and kind. Heros fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, and do not judge those who they are fighting for. They are charitable in ways other than donating money, they give their time and effort in order to make the lives of others more pleasant. Heros display bravery, as they are willing to go into a dangerous situation to help others that have been aggrieved. A hero is just like an ordinary person, but they make a choice to rescue someone, and put their life on the line. For instance, a hero is valiant when they need to be, sacrifices themself for another, and they don't put another in harm’s way.

Every individual has a different perspective on what makes a person a hero, for it is not limited to a certain concept; determination, altruism and a hint of hardship and bravery can always birth a hero. Although many acts of heroism are seen and made everyday, the levels of these attributes vary. Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman are both philanthropic, noble individuals that willingly spent their lives as abolitionists of slavery, and both are great examples of the highest levels of selflessness and heroism.

Ricky Martin once said, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Ghandi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” Almost anyone can be a hero, as long as they have the courage and the maturity to understand and respect those who they attempt to help. Despite the fact that a hero cannot save everyone, being heroic is about placing others before oneself and strive to help those who need it the most.

Heroes rise and act in times of need, even if obstacles may stand in the way. For instance, Frederick Douglass an abolitionist, and Vincent Ardolino, a man who rescued others at the BOATLIFT of 9-11 both acted to help during a time when heroes were needed even though obstacles stood in their way. Frederick Douglas’ feelings towards rising and speaking against slavery are described in his autobiography The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Douglass stated, “ The truth was I felt myself a slave, and the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down.” Frederick, although he felt unworthy, stood that day and spoke as a symbol against slavery. Frederick Douglas’ actions led him to be “engaged in pleading the cause of my brethren” from then on, and to be seen as a hero until today. Likewise, Vincent Ardolino is a man who acted when he saw others in need to be rescued off the island during the chaos of 9-11.

Whenever the word hero is mentioned, many people immediately have a visual image of a or their hero. There is a common misconception that heroes have to defeat some giant creature or force, and save a princess. This is the basis of numerous fictional heroes however. Oftenly in novels, movies, etc., the main protagonist or hero in general, can be referred to as an epic hero. An epic hero is typically one who does or did something of much significance and became well-known for it. They also might have had traveled over a great distance, or had a noble birth. An example of an epic hero is Homer’s Odysseus from The Odyssey. Odysseus’s accomplishments include fighting in the Trojan War, achieving fame, and traveling around the world. Although there are plentiful fictional and made up heroes, there are real life heroes too. One of these is Frederick Douglass, a former slave and one of the biggest leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. Douglass embodied an epic hero because he exemplified national heroism, being capable of great deeds of courage and strength, and distant travel.

Heroism is helping others, even if it puts you at risk. Frederick Douglass was born a slave in the 1800s, but eventually managed to escape to a free state. He had finally escaped the dreaded slavery, but he remembered those who hadn’t escaped, those still toiling in the horrid conditions. He spoke out, at anti-slavery meetings, risking all he had gained for others. “...beaten to his knees, exiled, visioning a world where none is lonely, none hunted, alien…”(Hayden). Frederick had been denied his freedom and told that he was worse than everybody else. He could still believe in a free world even after all he had been through. A hero is a risk taker, brave, and confident human being. Heros aren’t justin comics they are all around us. Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas are both good examples of heroic people because they risk what they have and sometimes themselves to help others. In this case Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation, and Frederick douglas with freeing himself and getting others freed too.

In order to be classified as such, one must perform their tasks without the promise of monetary gain or public recognition. Abolitionist Harriet Tubman not only meets this criteria, but follows “the meaning of heroism [which] has a lot to do with evolving into a higher human being” (SB pg. 64). Tubman escaped from the chains of slavery, and when given the chance to live a life a peaceful life of isolation, refused it, to help those still in bondage receive the same freedom she now had. Tubman served the public, as well elevated into a higher human being by conducting what was called the Underground Railroad, a series of safe houses organized for runaway slaves. She “freed thousands of slaves, and could have freed thousands more, if they had known they were slaves.” By risking her life for her cause, despite uncertainty of what benefit she would derive from doing so, makes her a hero. But not all instances of this degree of heroism are planned. In fact, many acts of heroism are done quickly, in times of crisis. Such is the case for boatlift worker Vincent Ardolino. Ardolino was simply watching television when he saw footage of burning buildings crumbling to the ground on 9/11, felt “the heroic impulse...which is greater than oneself” (SB pg. 64) and rushed to evacuate those he could save by boat. She is a girl who seems unable to fit in, and when China goes to war her aging must enlist in the army, unless he has a son that can take his place. For example policemen, firefighters, nurses, lifeguards etc. are heroes everyday because they take the time to save lives. When they’re going through a challenge or trying to overcome a conflict they always have courage. These people risk their own life to save someone else’s. She was confident and determined to finding out what went wrong in the boy’s leg and went through many procedures looking at the tests.

They focus on doing what is right for others and trying their best in everything that they do. Although being a hero does not always involve having powers or a cape, heroes make difficult sacrifices for others and are normal people whose actions often go unnoticed.
