Education is known as one of the most important things in the United States. Society should make everything in their power to provide students and teachers with extra time to make the best out of the education they’re given. As students, they don't always have enough time to do homework as most students do activities after school. Giving students and teachers one less day of school will allow students to do their work and for teachers to get things ready for the upcoming week. Four-day school is a great idea as it improves students attitude and grades, it leads to saving money, and it increases teachers preparation time.
To begin, Colby High School should change to a four-day school as it improves students attitude and grades. Most students have after school activities and have little to no time to do assignments and other projects. As well most students are involved in some type of competitive activity which usually makes them more exhausted by the end of the week. Teachers usually use their free time grading and preparing lessons for other days. Shana Myers explained to Cindy Long that “Working Saturdays wasn’t exactly our idea of a great way to spend our weekend - we all have families, errands, and household chores, not to mention grading”(2). Teachers, as well as students, need time to spend with their families and enjoy the little free time they have. “But now that Myers and her colleagues are on a four-day week, they use Fridays as their planning day”(2). This shows how changing into a four-day school benefits teachers by giving them more time to prepare and yet have time of their own. Teachers having extra time to prep for lessons but it's also said that kids having an extra day during the weekend can lead to them not remembering things from the week
Though some people say that four days in a school week will help students in certain classes especially in math, this test only worked on 4th and 5th graders. So it is illogical to think that a four day week will help other grade levels. My main concern is that most kids will not be able to focus by the end of the day because the school days will be longer,and so there would be no point in trying to teach at the end of the day. Financial problems have arose in many schools. Many schools believe that “One day less means one day less of heating the school, fueling buses, feeding students and paying certain staff members” (Anderson). Little things like that can save schools a lot more money. More money means more equipment for learning and new schools objects. “An informational poll on edutopia.com indicates that 67% of over 2700 polled favor this as a solution to school districts financial hardship” (Hadfield). A lot of people want the four day week to be a “thing” so that financial problems can no longer be a problem. Teachers and schools would say “Their budgets has been stretched tighter than a drum and has finally reached a breaking point that cannot be ignored” (Occupy Theory). A sign that teacher and student are getting a bit tired of the stress being put on them because of financial problem. There are more benefits along with the resolution of financial problems and it is academics.
Imagine a school year that gave the students one week off after every quarter and every Friday off. Does this sound exciting and rich with possibilities? Then ask the superintendent of the school district to consider year round school with only four days per week.First, students would not forget what they learned over the long summer. Next, parents would not have to get day care except on Fridays instead of the whole summer. Finally, teachers and students would have better relationships as they spend more time together instead of being rushed. Let’s take a look at some proof.
There are approximately 300 children enrolled in California Elementary School under the age of eight. These 300 would have to find some alternative to school on Fridays if the Moniteau County R-1 School District’s schedule changed from a five day week to a four day week. Additionally student involvement and safety would suffer. Changing the Moniteau County R-1 School district’s schedule to a four-day week would be detrimental to students’ safety and involvement in activities.
The overall logistics run much smoother in schools that have four day weeks compared to the five day week. “Some districts had experienced a decline in dropout rates, decreased disciplinary referrals, improved attendance, fewer class interruptions, more positive attitudes about school, and better staff development” (Yarbrough and Gilman 81). Four Day School Act is beneficial for students attending middle school through twelfth grade along with school faculty. This program is important for students who lose focus and began being disengaged in classes towards the weekend giving them enough time to recuperate an extra day. The other option is to cut Monday as well since it is the beginning of the week where students to also be less engaged. The possible outcome effect is less absences, higher test scores, and less yelling from teachers to stay on task. While students are out on Thursday, that leaves Friday for school faculty to prepare for the following week. Teachers can accomplish various things even schedule meetings on a Monday or a Friday.
Students can sometimes complain about how long the school year is and how they cannot wait for summer. There is a solution to this problem and it is known as year-round schooling. This helps to fix many problems for students. It gives them vacation time between each semester, allowing their brains to have a time of rest. Also, with a shorter summer break it allows for student´s brains to not forget extensive amounts of information. Since students do not lose the information over the summer this accounts for less reviewing time and more time to learn about new subjects. With more education upon the student it allows them to test higher than other non-year-round schoolers. There are year-round schools and they should spread throughout all high schools, in the United States, because it will be beneficial to the students.

According to the article, Garfield's reading and writing scores increased between four and six percent at the high school level, but math scores remained the same. But district officials aren't reading too much into the scores. Theresa Hamilton, the schools superintendent said, “One year of data does not make a trend, as a district, that data didn’t say anything significant either way. This school had seven percent more students scoring at or above grade level in reading, when two other schools had increases of five and six percent. In math, three percent of students scored at or above grade level in a school with a longer day, compared with one percent for a low performing school and an average of one percent for other schools (Brett 1). This information is one example of many studies that illustrate that long school days have a great positive impact on school performance. The main school goals are improving students’ knowledge and building different skills that will help them in the future. Therefore, if longer school days support these educational goals, people should be concerned about improving schools by lengthening the day.
Attendance is impacted in a positive way with a four day school week. With the research that has been done with attendance and those students who are enrolled in school which run on a four day school week schedule have seen improvement with attendance. They have seen an increased improvement in attendance with a four day school week, because many parents are able to schedule their child’s appointments on the days off from school. With having and increased attendance from that extra day off it means that students are able to get the most out of their schedule. Student are able to take advantage of the days that are available to them in the classroom and are also less likely to miss out on class
On average a student goes to school at least nine hundred to a thousand hours a year. What if you can learn the same information in a less amount of time? Studies show that having a 4 day school week has its pros and cons. There are three hundred and sixty days in one full year, and out of those three hundred and sixty days students are required to go to school at least one hundred and eighty of them. The reasons schools should have a 4 day school week are because it improves the economy, improves attendance, improves behavior, also because the longer week does not affect grades.
The four day school week is a very controversial topic. Opponents say that student’s academic retention suffers. However, proponents say that students miss less days being absent, and many school districts save money, which leads to a higher quality education.
At this point in time, school runs five days a week leaving two days off. A four day school week has always been there as an idea but never actually been the reality in our school district. The shortened week would provide the same amount of learning time in one less day making the school days longer to account for an additional day off. There are schools nearby us that have shifted to this schedule including the school on Bowen Island as well as several others in bc. School 4 days a week with elongated days would be advantageous for students and teachers because students in sports will have more time to train, students will have increased time to catch up on school work over the extended weekend, teachers will have augmented
It has come to the school board’s attention that the surrounding schools have started having a four day school week. They are debating whether or not they should follow through with this action. A four day week would be a horrible idea for the school board to follow through with.
Having four, ten hour days of school per week would allow for more learning in one day, and a longer recovery time on weekends after a long week. With a ten hour day, you could fit more or longer classes in each day allowing students to absorb more information. Everything so far would make sense, but there are down sides to long days.
