In 2012, a tragic mass shooting occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. For weeks, after the shooting, articles and new reports surrounded the tragic incident. Articles specifically about the shooter, Adam Lanza, began surfacing when it was discovered that he had been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (now referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder) as a child. These reports not only perpetuated stigmatic ideas surrounding mental illness, but also bolstered a fear of people with mental health conditions throughout the public. By adding to the already numerous amount of headlines surrounding Adam Lanza’s diagnosis, First Post continued the cycle of linking mental illness with violence and tragedy. Even today, a person is far more likely to read news headlines linking a person with a mental health condition to a violent act or tragic event, rather than linking a person with a mental health condition to a positive situation. One good aspect about this article, though, was the inclusion of information on Asperger’s Syndrome by psychologist Laugeson and psychologist Eric Butter. The article listed poor social skills, repetitives behaviors and interests, and poor communication as common symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome and general autism. They also stated that Asperger’s Syndrome differs from autism, as delays in mental development and speech are not typical in those with this disorder.
