Keeping faith Elie's struggle with his faith to God is a major internal conflict he has with him self in the book Night. In the beginning of the book, his faith in God is completly untoched. When questiond about his faith and why he would pray to God, he ask, “Why did I pray? Why did I live? Why did I breathe?”( Winsel Pg 2) His belief in a powerful and able God is untouched, and he cannot think of living without his faith in his religions practices, as it has been one of the main guides in his life. But this faith he has is shaken by his experience during the Holocaust and the events that took place, what he lives and what he sees. If all the prisoners were to join as one and oppose the cruel oppression of the Nazis, Elie believes maybe then he could understand the german menace as an evil aberration. He would then be able to maintain the belief that humankind is For the most part good. But he sees that the Holocaust shows the selfishness, evil, and cruelty of which everyone and not only the germans, but also in the prisoners that surrond him, his fellow Jews, even himself is capable of this evil and un God like structure. If the world is so disgusting and cruel, he feels then God either must be disgusting and cruel or must not exist at all. Elie is now truly starting to question his faith in what he was tought to be a perfect and able, kind and gracious God. For his whole life up until this point God has been the center of it all. From life to death, the creator of it all, He wonders how God could be the minister of this hell like enviorment. At this point in the book Elie without doubt at the lowest point in his life, fighting with him self and an outside force (the German's) who show a curl and horrible world, and bettew God who preches a perfact and hearted world in which he no longer
