In the past there are many struggles you need to overcome. Depression in a poor family, violence in a city and also no education. That relates to Guy Montag in the novel. He was in a city with no books to read and educate himself with and he was in a city where people would drive cars as fast as they can to treat themselves when sad. The fear of the truth and admitting the truth is boldly seen in Fahrenheit 451, and then when it is revealed to the person, it results in brokenness and sorrow. Beatty is a prime example of avoiding the truth.
