In this essay, I’ll discuss the founders of Confucianism and why it was introduced to the Chinese people as a belief they should follow. I’ll explain all three founders’ main theories and the effect it had on Confucianism as a whole. I’ll also examine why Confucianism was brought in by the Han Dynasty. Confucianism is the “system of ethics, education and statesmanship taught by Confucius and his disciples.” [1] It’s also dedicated to the study of mankind, making it a form of humanism. Confucianism, as a whole, is a faith that holds much hope for civilisation and is very optimistic in it’s’ teachings.

Neo-Confucians believe that Mencius was the last sage. Mencius was slightly more influential, but not more important, than Confucius because Mencius taught the beliefs to rulers and noblemen. Mencius’ political philosophy was more accepted by government leaders and officials. A problem with Mencius is that like Confucius, he didn’t write down any of his teachings and they weren’t compiled till after his death. They were compiled by Zhao Qi who eliminated what he believed were inferior passages, leaving today’s seven passages of Mencius. Obviously this theory is exactly that, just a theory and no theory is ever fully correct or exact but it led to a very optimistic approach to life for Confucians and dedication to their fathers, elders and ancestors. Through studying why Confucianism was introduced by the Han Dynasty, we see how strategically they thought about their decisions and how the general public perceived them, wanting to out rule any other dynasty before them and elongating their period of influence and in
