Decent Essays

In “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards, fear is being used in order to try and scare the reader into becoming a better person and religious. Fear is something that is sometimes used in order to manipulate people and in this case fear is being used in order to convince people into becoming religious or into becoming a better person. For example, “... Consider the fearful danger you are in: it is a great furnace of wrath, a wide and bottomless pit, full of the fine of wrath, that you are held over in the hand of that God, whose wrath is provoked and incensed as much as against you, as against many of damned in hell”(Edward, para, 90). The author makes it clear that not only god decides but, that the sinner decides what will happen to them. If the sinner does not change or become religious god won’t be able to hold them from falling into hell. Edward tries to get the sinners afraid of hell in order for the sinners to change their
