“The Blind Side” is an inspiring movie based on the true story of Michael Oher. The movie shows both the hard times and good times of his life and how he got to the place he is now. Michael’s story begins with him being homeless and alone. His mother was an alcoholic and his father was never there for him. He had to grow up on the streets and survive. Leigh Anne Tuohy is the woman who changes his life. She takes him into her home where she lives with her husband Sean, son S.J., and daughter Collins. The family quickly accepts him as one of their own and they adopt him. They send him to high school where he struggles with his grades and meeting friends. A major scene that demonstrates discrimination is the high school football game against the Lions. This is Michael’s first big game and he looks very intimidating to the other team since he is a very large, black guy. The guy guarding him is white and not as big, but he has a lot of confidence. The white guy is beating him and stepping on him most of the game. He even kicks his helmet and calls him a “black piece of crap” after one play. His dad is up in the stands yelling racist things about Michael the whole game. Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of a person based on their membership in a certain race or category. It is the actual physical behavior towards this person. According to the text, to discriminate means to draw a distinction between two things. In this scene everyone sees the distinct difference between Michael and the other players and because of that they label him as this big, black aggressive guy. When they finally see him play, they realize that his look does not match his attitude. He does not like to hurt people, but he loves to protect the people he cares about. After his coach shows that he cares for Michael he creates a whole new game. During this game he turns the discriminating words and actions into mesmerized stares as he blocks his opponent and creates an amazing play. Discrimination is when someone has a bias opinion on a specific crowd of people due to their race, sex, religion, or order of rank. This basically goes hand in hand with the phrase judging a book by its cover meaning the person with the negative opinion will not give the other individual a fair chance for the reason being they are being stereotypical and not thinking of the other person’s talent, or character. A modern day example of discrimination would be if a male employer were to compensate a female employee a lower pay due to her gender. At some time in everyone’s life due to today society, we have all been victimized by discrimination. Whether it may be a dirty look from a random person, or the way you dress, talk, and even look.

The film, “The Blind side”, produced by John Lee Hancock, demonstrates that a tragic childhood does not necessarily mean one is destined for defeat, as long as there are those who care enough about you. “The Blind Side” uses rhetorical appeals by illustrating ethos, logos, and pathos to teach the audience moral lessons on learning and coping with traumatic life experiences and defining oneself socially through personal actions.

If you were German during the holocaust you were going to get sent to a concentration camp to die no matter what age you were. In an amazing twist of fate, Oher’s life changed for the better when he was taken in by a loving, but strict, Christian by the name of Leigh Anne Tuohy. The Tuohys took Michael under their wing and raised him as their own. As they got to know the new addition to the family, the Tuohys soon discovered “Big Mike” had a talent. He grew up very poor in the inner city housing projects with his mother in Memphis Tennessee. He had no idea who is father was, and his mother was a drug addict. Michael had very little formal education and very few skills in order to help him learn. It wasn’t until Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy took him into their home and made changes in Michael’s life for the better. The Tuohy family had two kids of their own. A daughter Collins and a son S.J. S.J was immediately accepting to the idea of taking in Michael, whereas Collins had a very difficult time. This may be because it was not a part of Collins’ normal culture. She saw Michael as an outsider for various reasons. He was a poor, homeless, African American. The Tuohy’s were a very wealthy, high class, white family. Collins worried what her peers at school would think and worried she would be looked at differently. Over time she did not allow other people’s opinions bother her and accepted Michael into her family. Leigh Anne made sure Michael knew he had every opportunity to succeed just like everyone else. When she saw his interest in football, she made sure the coaches knew the best ways to use Michael’s skills. The Blind Side is a movie based on a true story about a high socioeconomic status (SES) white family that takes in a homeless African American boy. Michael Oher came from the very poor ghettos where his father vanished from his life and his mother was known to be a drug addict. He struggled to meet everyday needs such as food to eat and fresh clothes to wear. Child protection services took it upon themselves to remove him from that environment and placed him into group homes which he repeatedly ran away from. It was luck and the need for a football player with Oher’s body proportions that allowed him to enroll in a private school where he met the Tuohy kids (Netter & Hancock).
