Additionally, the story centers around a noble Danish king, Hrothgar and a ferocious monster named Grendel. [introduction] Beowulf has survived as a literary masterpiece for over 1,300 years as a result of its vivid imagery, varied tone, and unique diction and style.
To begin, in the text, Beowulf, there was a theme of heroism which made the story one of my favorites. Beowulf is an outstanding hero who is willing to give up his life to save everyone. He has insane battles against scary monsters that no one else could even
Bravery is possibly the most common heroic trait exhibited by Beowulf in the epic poem. His bravery is unquestionable and it is easily observed in any of his battles. For example his choice to fight Grendel without armor truly demonstrates his unwavering courage. ”I have heard moreover that the monster scorns in his reckless way to use weapons … I hereby renounce sword and the shelter of the heavy broad shield”(Beowulf 215). Another example of Beowulf’s bravery was when he fought the dragon. At the time of the battle, Beowulf is close to seventy years old and he chooses to fight alone, sparing a group of his finest warriors who he has positioned outside of the cave only as emergency back ups. In the end Beowulf only outlives the dragon’s fatal bite through the intervention of Wiglaf.
Bravery is one of Beowulf strongest character traits. Time and time again he proves his valor through acts of heroism. Almost immediately upon his entrance, Beowulf describes some of his past deeds, which include the slaying of nine sea-beasts.(Beowulf 55-86) He abstains from the use of weapons when he fights Grendel, choosing instead grapple the beast bare-handed. (Beowulf 25-29) This courage once again resurfaces when he braves icy waters to confront Grendel's mother. (Beowulf pg. 24)
Beowulf was a brave warrior and a noble fellow in his youth. He shows this by his fights with Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Beowulf will never back down from a fight and stays true to his word until death. With these victories he is characterized as a hero and he has a feature of strength. He told people he was a hero after he helped stop the plagues at Denmark. Before this Beowulf is trying to make a name for himself and It is a very important task to young Beowulf. Beowulf already has great achievements but his is out to make his name greater a does. Beowulf is also said to have the strength of 30 men in his hand grip. Beowulf was probably the best warrior around with his great bravery. Beowulf is also a good looking man as we are told by the scylding guard in lines 247-248.
