After reading the Gettysburg address, it showed the civil war depicted a deep shatter during the eighteenth century in the American society because it was said to be the bloodiest battle of the American civil war. This was a war within the nation of America but not from another country. The war was about dividing the union of the North and Confederacy of the south because they both had different beliefs. The war which was fought on July 1863 was a unified victory which stopped General Robert E Lee from invading the North the second time. It was a three day battle which involved so many casualties. As a result of this war, Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in order to dedicate Gettysburg National Cemetery to use to honor the soldiers who had fallen as a result of this war. His speech at the cemetery is what we now know as the Gettysburg address. This speech has just ten sentences and 272 words but Lincoln was able to use this speech to make a lasting impact that would not just be for the audience at Gettysburg, but will also be remembered throughout history. The speech conveyed was about the war and the beginning of the human rights and reasons why soldiers gave their lives. He reassured the benefits that the founding fathers had made during the declaration of independence and the constitution. Abraham Lincoln presumed that the war would end when there is a union victory but he also wants the people to know that if the country merges together as one,
After the Battle of Gettysburg, which involved the largest number of casualties in the American Civil War and was according to many the war’s turning point, president Lincoln delivered a meaningful speech known as the Gettysburg Address. In his speech, president Lincoln wisely uses ethos, pathos and logos.
The Battle of Gettysburg is the most recognizable battle throughout the every other battle in all of the Civil War. It had the most casualties out of any battle within the Civil War with 46,000 to 51,100 people between both armies together. The Battle of Gettysburg took place on the third of the Civil War (Background Essay) and both sides of the war , The Union and The Confederacy, were in a deadly stalemate at the time. The Civil War was going on because the country was divided because of slavery and sectionalism. The South was pro-slavery because most of their economy depended on their slaves and the work they did on the plantations in the South. The election of Abraham
The Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches in American history. The History Place indicates that on November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln went to a battle field positioned in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where three dreadful days of battle occurred called the Battle of Gettysburg. While he was attending the battle field to dedicate it as a national cemetery, he read his speech to the public. After the main orator, Edward Everett of Massachusetts, delivered his speech that lasted about two hours, it was Lincoln’s turn. Everyone was shocked that it only lasted a little over two minutes. The speech talked about the men who fought in the Civil War to help create the nation people have today: that it is only fair to honor them
That was the reason for the visit to Gettysburg. It was a trip with Edward Everett to dedicate a newly created cemetery that was must needed in the country at the time due to all the fallen during the war. President Lincoln followed Mr. Everett’s two hour speech with his two minute speech which was decided in nature to sum up what Mr. Everett just talked about. A key thing to remember in the Gettysburg address was the importance not to forget about the fallen young Soldier’s on the battle field. This is mentioned in the in the second sentence of the second paragraph “ We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who died here, that the nation might live”. What the President is talking about is the importance of not just remembering the fallen but also reminding the audience of why they died. They died believing in a cause; weather it’s about uniting the country or making two separate
It was full of the history about the nation, the civil war, and a recap of the three day battle. The real purpose of this speech was to dedicate a cemetery to the fallen soldiers (“Wise Words” 1). Lincoln had said during his two minute speech was that the best way for the living to honor the dead was to continue with the cause (Wise Words 1). What lincoln had meant by a new birth of freedom was that the nation would be free for both blacks and whites. This government cannot endure a permanently half free and half slave population (Barney, Brett, and Lisa Paddock 1). With this being said, the speech gave universal satisfaction to the
The Gettysburg Address was a speech composed and addressed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, at the time of the political fight in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. At that time, Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States. He was also the President who led America through the Civil War. During the Civil War, at Gettysburg, some soldiers died protecting the nation. This was mentioned in Lincoln’s speech, which was meant to be dedicated to the soldiers who died defending their people. He spoke of how a piece of land on Earth should be dedicated in their memory in order to show respect for dead soldiers. The Gettysburg Address was an effective way of President Abraham Lincoln communicating with the people of the United States at a time
The climax of the war occurred at Gettysburg, where General Ulysses S. Grant faced General Robert E. Lee. The Union had won the war, by cutting the Confederacy into two halves. Shortly after, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address (Document G), in which he stated that all men are created equal. He was not only trying to acknowledge the slaves, but also the section issues living between the North and South. He stated, “God shall have a new birth of freedom...by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
The beginning of this speech was a the beginning of a new leaf to the war. This speech proves that president lincoln was wishing to end the war. Why? Firstly he brought back to life the founding fathers declaration of all men are created equal. Next president lincoln brings to light the cause of the civil war. President Lincoln states the cause is that some people are not able to accept the fact that all men are equal. (Doc D) Lincoln’s powerful speech helped the union to understand the need to the war. The war that had been going on for three years and the loss of many good soldiers. This speech brought the reminder to people that 7,000 people died in just only three days! This shows that Gettysburg was a turning point in the civil war because both the army and civilians were tired of losing so many soldiers in the
The Battle of Gettysburg first began as a “gentle” time period, where the marching soldiers from both armies would stop to peacefully gather cherries from the trees they would pass. These “peaceful” events didn’t last for a long period of time before the battle let loose. This battle was between two different types of people. In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863, the battle between North and South, Union and Confederates, had began. The South was going against the North, believing the government had too much power, which led them to secede. The Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point during the American Civil War due to the numbers of casualties, the Gettysburg Address, and the geography of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The Gettysburg address was not so much focused on an issue or debate. When Lincoln started writing this speech, its intention was to be in memory, devotion and honor to those who died, and also to declare the ground as a cemetery. He says “We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might
From the three speeches, I think that the “Red Jacket’s Speech to Rev. Cram” is the one who have Ethos, Logos and Pathos on the same proportion in a perfect balance. In the speech, Seneca Chief Red Jacket, appealing to Ethos built respect and trust from the very beginning, and through the whole text by showing his esteem to the Boston missionary and to his religion. Logos is also among the text in the form of a logic explanation of why his religion is as important as the other, comparing both, looking for contradictions, and looking for similarities, resulting in a logical lesson of respect for other cultures and religions. Pathos is also present in the text. Red Jacket is using a tone of proximity addressing directly with words as “you”, “brother”,
The time of the speech was towards the end of the civil war, when the North and the South where still fighting after a bitter 4 year war. The battle of Gettysburg had already been fought and Lincoln had given the distinguished Gettysburg address just a few months before. He spoke of freedom, devotion, and the ideals for which he believed the Union stood. Lincoln had also already written the emancipation proclamation which had freed the slaves of the south in the previous year. The audience which

On November 19th of 1863, at the official dedication ceremony for the National Cemetery of Gettysburg located in Pennsylvania. Abraham Lincoln gave what has since been referred to as The Gettysburg Address. This was given at the location of one of the civil wars most important and bloody battles. Lincoln was not supposed to give a public speech that day, but when given the invitation he did not turn it down. After Edward Everett's 2 hour speech Lincoln stood up to a crowd of nearly 15,000, and gave his speech of 273 words in less than 2 minutes. In it, he brought attention to principles of human equality within our own declaration of independence and the importance of preserving the union. Though the Gettysburg Address is said to be one of history’s most significant speeches. Modern scholars cannot agree as to what the exact wording of the speech was.
Being the president of the United States of America in the 1860s’ was a doughty task, especially with the country being divided. Throughout the American Civil War, different battles were being fought everyday leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg which was considered the turning point of the Civil War. Lincoln was chosen to deliver this important speech on November 19, 1863 to show thanks for the Union soldiers and dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery. The cemetery was for Union soldiers who were killed at the Battle of Gettysburg during the war. Lincoln once said, “the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here. (Lincoln 1)” In today’s society, people remember Lincoln not only as our president, but giving this important three paragraph speech. Lincoln felt that he needed to make a speech to show that the expense of the war had to end with a positive effect which is why the country needed to continue to fight.
