Abc Company Ethical Dilemma

Utilitarianism is a teological ethical framework that offers a way to analyze the transistor company’s dilemma. Utilitarianism is consequentialist in nature, meaning that the theory only takes in account the consequences of an action to determine if that action is morally right. More specifically, Kay (1997) explains “utilitarian ethics defines morality in terms of the maximization of net expectable utility for all parties affected by a decision or action” (p. X). For example, it would be acceptable to a utilitarian to kill one person if it meant saving two more people. This is in stark contrast with deontological ethics, which prohibits actions that use people as a means to an end.

I feel it is a person’s choice and it is different than suicide. It has to be well thought out and talked about with a team of people involved including physicians, psychologists, and family. I also think it is based more on

People from all walks of life face many ethical dilemmas. These dilemmas have consequences. Our worldview determines how we deal with these dilemmas, and guides us to the right decisions. Let’s start by gaining an understanding of what utilitarianism means. In other words, utilitarianism stays that the best decision is the one that would benefit the majority. In this case the stakeholders are Luka, Owen, their families and the company. If Luke decides to take this approach, he would have to analyze each stakeholder’s point of view and come up with the decision that would bring the greatest good for the large number. He will have to ask himself which decision would affect the least at both parties? If by telling his brother would ruin not only the project but also potential employees? On the other hand, the company could go ahead and do the project anyway if he tells his brother not to tell anyone else.

ABC Learning Ltd was an Australian provider of early child hood education services, founded in Queensland in 1988, that through its 18 centres was the largest single operator of early childhood education services in Australia by 1997. Led by founder Eddy Groves, ABC Learning Ltd continued to grow, through the opening of new centres and the acquisitions of rivals i.e. peppercorn Childcare in 2004 in which 450 centres were purchased for $340 million. “By 2008, ABC Learning was the largest provider of childcare, holding around 20 per cent of the long day care market and providing care to over 100 000 children” (Senate education, employment workplace relations committee, 2009).

Luke has been asked to work on a project that involves developing land recently bought by ABC to build an adult entertainment retail store. According to the plan, Luke’s brother, Owen, whom he is very close to, lives in the neighborhood that the adult entertainment retail store plan will be built. Luke knows that as soon as the plans for the store become public, the property value of the homes in Owen’s neighborhood are expected to decrease significantly. Luke is concerned about his confidentiality obligations to the company. Owen has openly expressed to Luke that he has thought about putting his home on the market for sale; this is concerning for Luke. He knows that Owen has received and acceptable offer for his home already, but wonders if the market for real estate in the area will increase in the next few years.

David Jacob should analyze the situation with different interests in mind. Since he was looking for an exit from this business that he built from perseverance and hard work, it would be to his benefit to obtain the maximum amount of money possible from the sale. This makes the strategic buyers more favorable. However, His sons who currently work for the company would probably lose their jobs. Finally, taking in consideration of his age of 70, which is an age where he would probably want to just enjoy his life as much as possible, we would say that he should choose to sell to the strategic buyer and take the higher premium and just leave the business completely.
