FACTS
Luke is an employee of ABC Company. He has been assigned to a construction of an adult entertainment retail store within a neighborhood his brother, Owen, lives in. The development of the retail store has not been made public yet and will be announced one month from today. This announcement will decrease the property values of the surrounding areas significantly. Owen is trying to sell his house. He told Luke that he recently received an ‘okay’ offer. However, in hopes that a better offer might be present itself in a few years after the real estate market improve, he has not taken the offer yet. Luke is very close to his brother, which makes him concerned about his confidentiality obligation to ABC Company.

The utilitarian approach takes all the stakeholders into consideration and prefers the “…option that does more good than harm to stakeholders”. (Ethics Video 1) In this case, Luke must analyze which decision will create the most value and benefit for the stakeholders which include some of the following: investors, employees, ABC’s reputation and partnerships, Owen, and the person buying the house from his brother.’

Reveling confidential information to Owen will certainly benefit his brother. It’ll most likely prompt him to accept the current offer because he might realize that the sensible decision is to accept the current offer before the announcement decreases his neighborhood’s market value. But by Luke telling his brother, he runs the risk of his standing within the company, the company’s reputation being ruined with negative publicity, or even the possibility of the project getting pulled due to protests from the neighborhood causing finical lost to the company that effects many stakeholders like employees and constructor workers. Additionally, other competitors might get wind of construction plans and could possible affect the company’s competitive advantage in the
