Clinical Reflection: Observation
This clinical rotation I was assigned to observe at the operating room, where they conduct various surgical procedures. The night prior to the clinical, I have to admit, was every bit unnerving. Especially, the fear of not knowing what to expect was daunting. There must have been a thousand scenario of what to expect or what might possibly go wrong playing through my head that night. However, after being introduced to the nurse I would be following, and meeting the surgeon and the rest of the team; my nerves settled down. The surgery scheduled was for a ventral hernia, which seemed routine, but complicated by a previous bowel realignment previously. The whole operation, from beginning to end, lasted a little over four hours. Although, the procedure lasted that long, it did not bother me even bit. In spite of standing for the whole duration of the observation, I never felt tired nor gotten bored. Notably, watching the surgical team working cohesively is like watching an artists who have

That is, to be able to work alongside those who are as passionate as I am when it comes to performing tasks at hand. These team of professional in this week’s clinical rotation not only displayed their passion, but also their devotion in their respective field. Furthermore, each showed professionalism, working cohesively with each team members even during the tough and stressful stretch of the operation. Therefore, observations such as this clinical, allowed me to experience first hand the working relationship between various professions in the healthcare filed and enabled me to obtain a greater perspective on the roles that nurses fill. So, when I finally make it out of nursing school and gets the chance to work with these so called maestros, I would be fully confident that I am in tune while honing my
Witnessing the patience, strength, and compassionate attributions that nurses convey within their care was remarkable. Having the opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of another human being was a very overwhelming and humbling experience for me. Therefore, these encounters set the foundation towards my pursuit of a nursing career.
After observing my mother in at the emergency room where she works, I finally understand the difficulty of being a doctor. Doctors constantly having to take care of anyone who walks through the door on a stretcher. Doctors have to try their best to feel empathetic towards everyone, putting themselves in other people’s shoes and trying to understand their situation. Whether they are good or bad, it doesn’t matter, the main goal is to stabilize the patients and make sure they receive the help they need. For example, last night walked in a psychopath who had killed 3 people, who also stabbed himself in attempt at suicide. By some miraculous move by God he didn’t die, only required immediate medical attention. As I watched my mother operate
My first encounter with a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) was during my undergraduate nursing OB/GYN rotation. I was impressed with the CRNA when she placed the epidural to the patient in labor. I remembered patient had difficulty staying still due to the contraction, but the CRNA took her time to explain the procedure while comforting the distressed patient. Once the epidural was in placed and the medication started working, I could tell the relief the patient experienced. I realized then that a CRNA goes beyond the delivery of anesthesia, pain management and monitoring of patients. Thus, obtaining this degree will prepare me to ease the patient’s mind through education, pain management, monitoring, experience and compassion.
In today’s healthcare system, nursing is a challenging field as a result of rapid technological advances and changes in healthcare policies. As a dedicated nursing professional, with a great passion for learning, I strive to stay on top of these changes. I am determined to increase my knowledge to be an instrumental part of providing quality healthcare. The demands of nursing are high; however the rewards are even higher. Nursing requires both a supreme understanding of the science of health, and a caring bedside manner befitting only those who seek a position of such a personal involvement in the well-being of a patient. Academically, I will put forth all of
Nursing can be a demanding career, but the benefits far much outweigh the challenges. Most importantly, it’s the rewards it offers by allowing an opportunity to make a difference in another person’s life through the provision of care when they need it. Just as Patricia Benner theorized in her book “Novice to Expert,” nursing encompasses both educational knowledge and extensive clinical experience acquired throughout one’s career. This far, I continue to acquire knowledge and clinical knowhow which will promote proper and efficient care to patients. Since I began practicing one year ago in a long-term healthcare facility, I have interacted with patients, families, physicians and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient’s care which has enabled me to gain confidence in myself. While I cannot deny that it was difficult to transition from a student to a licensed nurse, I learnt to overcome these challenges and focus on my strengths. Practicing as an LPN has provided a platform to learn and gain experience even though the duties and responsibilities are limited by the scope of practice.
Public health nursing is an important aspect of nursing field, which contributes tremendously to the safety and health of our society. Public health nurses work hard to assure our communities are healthy and are able to attain needed support to be self-sufficient. However, it seems their hard work goes unnoticed by vast majority of our society. This of course, is my opinion, but I would say that if I were to survey various communities, most people would say that “Nurses just work in the hospital”. I could be very wrong.
The patient is a 12 year old female who presented to the ED with thoughts of self harm and cutting behaviors. The patient denies suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, and symptoms of psychosis. The patient reports that she has been sad lately. Per- documentation the patient reports to peers at her school that she was trying to kill herself, which the school sent her to DayMark. Further, Daymak IVC the patient and requested further evaluation.
On my second day of clinical experience this week I focused a lot on time management and documentation for a full patient load, and also on the admission and discharge process. After taking report on all three of our patients, I began my initial morning assessments. It was clear that our 8-year-old post-operative appendectomy was ready to be discharged. My priorities were assessing her incision sites and ensuring the presence of bowel sounds, as well as making sure she did not have a fever and was tolerating a general diet. After completing my assessment and documenting in the computer, we
The nursing profession is a challenge. As a nurse, you must remember every day that you can both alleviate suffering patients by administering treatment prescribed by a doctor and by a good word and a smile. For a good nurse should not matter how hard the day was, how much trouble it encountered, but must remember the core values of the profession and why he/she chose this profession. Nurses play an important role in the healthcare system. This is why they have been correctly referred to as the heart
The profession of nursing is often looked at as taking care of sick people or treating physical well-being. Many do not realize that nursing encompasses so much more than that. It is very important to me to have a positive attitude that transfers to my coworkers and patients. I want to be committed to helping those in need and desire to be able to be a confident health educator. I think it is very important to use the knowledge I have in my area of expertise to instruct others where it is needed. I would like to be able to say I gave the highest quality of care that I could at the end of each day. I realize that not everything will always be perfect or smooth, and there is only so much I can do. However, many of the rough patches can be eased with hard work and a good outlook. I want to be able to form great relationships with my colleagues as well as the client and facilitate everyone working together. Nursing is a respectable profession and I hope to contribute my own compassion to the entire community.
In January 2015 a patient observation was conducted on an inner city psychiatric male admission ward commencing at 10.30 am and concluding at 11.30am. The observation was carried out by the ward manager and the patient advice liaison service (PALS) manager.
His personable character and approachable nature displayed a lot of skills that are expected from every professional nurse. His passion for traveling across the world can inspire healthcare professionals to appreciate their jobs. This is a display of his capability to interact with people from all walks of life either as fellow professionals, learners, or as patients. This fact is important in the nursing career since sometimes patients, as well as employees, can prove to be difficult to work with. One needs to be equipped with a variety of social skills and communication skills to be able to handle them without bringing about any challenges.
At this candidate’s facility, a neonatal ICU (NICU) is located on site. There are many occasions when the patient is in the NICU with their baby and not present for the bedside report. In the even that this occurs, the report is completed between the 2 nurses and a tent card is left behind on the patient’s bed asking the patient to call with any needs they may have upon return to their room and also to expect to be rounded on hourly to meet all of their needs.
This submission is going to focus on the nursing care that I gave on two placement simulations and one shift on placement, placing emphasis on oral care, bed bathing and medication management. It will outline the fundamental aspects of clinical nursing skills that have taken place in my setting. This will also highlight the learning process taken place and how it helped me to enhance my knowledge, and ethical values in order to deliver quality and safety of care. Using other sources of current literature, I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of learning outcome. By utilising this model I hope to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding in relation to these skills as well as
I observed two different math classrooms for my clinical observation. The first classroom was in an urban school setting, grade two. The second classroom was in a more suburban school setting, fifth grade math. The second grade class period was ninety minutes long, the students rotated in groups to the teacher table and did a mini lesson there for about 15 minutes, while the rest of the 90 minutes was spent on a math website. The fifth grade class period was only 45 minutes long and the majority of what I saw was the teacher working with the students on correcting homework.
