On paper it may seem like Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were as different as two writers could be. Though both poets were born in the twentieth century, their writing styles and perspectives consistently contradict each other. However, occasionally when writing about their personal views on nature, religion, and life their views intertwine. Nevertheless, both Dickinson and Whitman still find ways to have unique ideas on the same topics. Nature is a prevalent and recurring theme throughout “Song of Myself” by Walt Whitman. Though nature is referenced more often than explored in Dickinson’s work, in “A narrow Fellow in the Grass”, the whole poem is about nature. What’s interesting is that Dickinson seems to take a page out of Whitman’s book. Throughout the poem, the point of view reflects not only on the narrator, but the reader as well, such as in the line “And then it closes at your feet.” (Dickinson 26) This is a method often used by Whitman throughout “Song of Myself”, and since it is unlike any perspective Dickinson usually takes, the reader can’t help but wonder if she was inspired by Whitman. In Dickinson’s poems, her characters are almost always more introverted. In the poem “I heard a Fly buzz--when I died--”, she talks about dying alone in the lines “The Stillness in the Room Was like the Stillness in the Air” (Dickinson 24). However, in “Song of Myself”, the narrator is drastically different. The narrator is full of life and happiness, as shown in the line “I am satisfied-- I see, dance, laugh, sing…” (Whitman 3). The narrator is also shown to be cheerful when interacting with others, though it is not something he does all the time. Emily Dickinson was an exceptional writer through the mid-late 1800’s. She never published any of her writings and it wasn’t until after her death that they were even discovered. The complexity of understanding her poems is made prevalent because of the fact that she, the author, cannot expound on what her writing meant. This causes others to have to speculate and decide for themselves the meaning of any of her poems. There are several ways that people can interpret Emily Dickinson’s poems; readers often give their opinion on which of her poems present human understanding as something boundless and unlimited or something small and limited, and people always speculate Dickinson’s view of the individual self.
“When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer” by Walt Whitman is the recollection of a speaker that attended an astronomer’s lecture only to be bored and leaves the room to enjoy the stars without scientific analyzation hindering their natural beauty. On the other hand, “324” by Emily Dickinson demonstrates the role of nature in the speaker’s personal connection to religion and God instead of attending Church and sermons. Although their topics seem so unlike, the poetic devices within them have both similarities and differences. Whitman’s and Dickinson’s poems bear many differences, including structure, meter, and rhyme, while remaining alike in their use of imagery to convey like attitudes towards traditionalism and nature.
While both are famous trailblazers the two are vastly different. Incipiently, both poets Emily Dickinson and poet Walt Whitman were well known poets one is considered to be one of America's greatest and most original poets, taking definition as her provience and challenging the existing definitions of poetry and a poet’s work, Whitman on the other hand was considered to be a latter day successor to Homer, Shakespeare and Dante, creating monumental work through the chatted praises from body to soul, found beauty and ressourance in death. Both poets come from opposite backgrounds, and while they both share inspirational sources, they do so in distinctive ways. Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson’s poetry is very different; however death seems to be a familiar topic amongst both poets. Opposites attract, and you could say the same for Whitman and Dickinson because though they have different writing styles both repeatedly write about death. Once more, although both Whitman and Dickinson have many different feelings about death, they also share many similar feelings about it as well. Although Walt Whitman's poetry is rather long and quite simple and Emily Dickinson's are often short and complex, the theme of death strongly ties their works together.

In “Song of Myself”, grass is the central image surrounding Walt Whitman’s ideology. The idea behind it is grass, in some ways, is very similar to people in society and natures lifecycles. As Whitman was “observing a spear of summer grass” (5), he began to question the human condition. One of Whitman’s first thoughts was that one individual, like a single spear of grass surrounded by more grass, is part of a large community of people. It’s impossible to differentiate from others, for all people are equal despite cultural, religious, or gender differences. Nevertheless, Whitman’s use of symbolism alludes to the idea that grass reflects the thoughts and condition of people in society.
The lives of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson have many similarities and differences. Here, we will focus on the similarities in their lives in order to bring to attention a correlation between Whitman's poem I Saw in Louisiana a Live-oak Growing and Dickinson's poem # 1510. Both poets wrote during the time of Romanticism, even though Whitman was Dickinson's senior by some eleven years. This however did not influence the way the writing styles of many of their poems coincided.
This poem is written in ballad form which is odd because one would think of a ballad and think a love story or an author gushing on about nature not an allegory about personified Death.
