English 101

In the past two months i fell like i have accomplished a great deal. As i focus on it more i realize i have become a better reader. I did this by concentrating on my readings and take my time to read them. With the help of my professor and classmates i began to analyze what i read.

A freshman college level English Composition course aims to improve students' abilities with writing, critical thinking, mechanics and usage, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. By studying English 101 at Luzerne County Community College, I will work diligently to improve in all of these aspects. My main focus is to develop skills specifically to create clear and concise thesis statements, strong and persuasive essays with cajolement, and to develop different perspectives on narratives and other essays. These writing skills may also improve my critical thinking and reading skills.

When producing a paper, it is important to write according to your audience for the best results, you wouldn't explain a topic to an academic community the same way you would explain the topic to one of your fellow classmates. English 111 has been an eye opener to how important this is to a paper. After learning this strategy, I now take the time to figure out who my audience is, find the appropriate information, include the appropriate supporting details, and choose my word wisely to fit the criteria of the

I learned many new things from English 1102 class. It was not much fun but I learned some interesting things. For my research, I needed a topic that interests me. I first started to search topics from the chemistry field. I could not find any interesting topics then I came across an article that talks about how robots will take our jobs and every one would be jobless. After reading that article, I was really convinced that robots were bad for human society and people should be focusing on improving other fields such as medicine than wasting time and money in inventing a robot, which is one type of luxury and that, will take our jobs. So I chose this topic for my research. For further discussions, I started searching for some more article about robots not good for human society and I found that there was not much about the negative impact of robots in human society other than taking human jobs. So I was stuck but then I found an article that supports the robots. It was a good article and it explains how robots are useful in human society. The Article says that robots will create new jobs and benefit employers, government and disable people. I also found in one article saying that if robots will do our jobs humans can focus on bigger problems like finding cures for diseases, finding solution to prevent natural disasters and many more. In my English 1010 class, I have learned to do a number of things through writing essays. I have written a Literacy Narrative, a Discourse Community Analysis, and a Writing Research essay. Firstly, I have learned to identify how an author’s purpose, audience, genre, and context determine effective writing. The purpose of the literacy narrative was to help me understand myself better as a writer (Jones 1). My teacher was the intended audience of the narrative. The genre of the narrative was non-fiction by cause of it being about my experience as a writer. The context of writing made my writing more interesting and more effective. Knowing those elements helps you to compose writing that is more effective due to you needing to know what you need to write about and who is receiving your writing. I displayed these skills by going into detail about my experiences with reading and writing through my life. As shown in the following sentence from my literacy narrative I shared how fun and exciting it was when my second-grade class received the opportunity to write a book, A Book of Future Astronauts, “Everyone in the class was truly excited to be writing our own book,” (Writing is Good).

There are many rhetorical situations to think about when developing a piece of writing. Purpose is how a writer expresses themself. It is important to identify the main purpose of what you are writing about because the purpose helps with identifying the genre, audience and the way to write. While developing a piece of writing there are going to be many different purposes. Find the primary purpose by asking yourself why you are writing and what you are writing. The audience is important when it comes to developing a piece of writing because it can affect the way you write. It also affects the type of genre you use. Have you ever wondered whether a writer’s voice and the standard rules of academic writing can exist on the same page? According to Dr. Debra Pena, English Professor, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Mathew Teorey, English Professor, University of New Mexico and the author of "Using Freshman Composition to Analyze What Students Really Know about Grammar" a writer’s voice and the process of academic writing can exist on the same page (Personal Communications February 13, 2017, Teorey 2). However, my first essay In Freshman Composition II titled, “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE): Is it the New Death Sentence for Future Athletes Playing Sports in America?” where I lost the power of my voice to the process of academic writing.

Before I enrolled in this Pacer English class I would generally study in my room, sitting on my bed, or I would sit at the kitchen table and study. I had a many advantages to doing this, because I would typically do it in the mornings, after my classes, when my husband was at work. I did have some disadvantages to this, because when I would sit in my bed to do my homework, I would get very restless or I would have cramps in my neck, causing me to want to quit studding for that time. When I would sit with my back against the head board and pillows all behind me I found that this made me feel more comfortable when I was sitting in my bed. The disadvantage to sitting at the kitchen table seemed more uncomfortable to me, because the chairs seemed hard after sitting there for quite some time. When I study, I try to sit for hours at a time to try and get all my work done at one time. I made sure that no matter where I was studying,

The writing process, not only taught us the three writing processes, but also writing in a style appropriate to audience and purpose. Having the audience and purpose of writing or reading is the first strategy to writing or reading. The more you know who your audience are, their background, cultural or belief system, the more you will have an idea on how to make your writing appealing to them and accomplish your purpose. Like I pointed out in the first paragraph, until now, I never considered who my audience for my writing will be and this I believe has defeated my purpose over time. Knowing my audience before each writing has gone a long way to influence my tone, diction and structure of my writings……(explain). Discovering the importance of the audience has been very insightful to the purpose of my writing through the learning

Throughout my educational years, I had only done writings that involves in small research papers, MLA style essays, and summary essays. However, English 101 has given me a new way to look at my writing skills. Most of the writings I have been doing so far in this course were interpretative essays where we interpreted and reflected on other’s writing and then reflecting back to ours own writing. This class also has given me the opportunity to work with my classmates and a chance to discuss about the writing strategy they made in their papers versus the strategy I made in my papers. In addition, I find the in-class activity to be very useful because it allows me to see other’s perspectives and feedbacks. The in-class activities were class discussions, group works, and conference with the instructor. At the end of the semester, the class objective was to pick out two best interpretative essays that we have been working on with a final reflective essay to include in our final portfolio. So for the rest of this essay, I would like to talk about my two best interpretive essays that I have decided to include in my final portfolio: “Death of a Funeral Business”, and “No Time to think” and “Time Ain’t Money”.

Describing the Class: The class to which the syllabus relates is the first class from two designed to help students develop their abilities to produce unambiguous expository writing. Focus and concentration will get placed on written composition processes like analyzing audiences, selecting topics, developing the fundamentals they will need later in writing a thesis, and making revisions. By the time they’ve completed the course, each student will produce prose adhering to English writing standards, works displaying coherence and unification, plus solid developmental quality.

Often people tend to overlook the many lessons we can learn from everyday things and situations. However, the lessons that you can learn can prove to be very beneficial, and sometimes even be used for something in your own life. For example, in my English class we’ve been reading Eudora Welty’s, One Writer’s Beginnings, and throughout the book she teaches the reader a lot of lessons if you pay close attention. Welty taught me on a writer’s level how to key in on a subject, expand my vocabulary, and find something/someone who inspires you.

What I learned from this semester in English 101-102 class was to have an open mind and be creative. My papers had to have mean something to me and had to move like the rivers of Babylon. My papers had to keep the reader entertain and have resources that backed up my information. We had to use instruction that made our papers easier to understand. English 101-102 help me become a better academic writer because I learn how to make inquiries, seeking and valuing complexity, seeing writing as a conversation, and understanding writing as a process.

Paul McHenry Roberts wrote an article 70 years ago that is still relevant for writing student’s today because the major issues he elaborates on are concepts most young writers need to improve on today – stance, content, and word choice. He begins by explaining the importance of taking a proper stance. A problem with writers today is that they will take the side that requires the least work, usually filling the space with overlapping information. Mr. Roberts promotes a solution: take the less obvious side. While many today wish to avoid extra work, by taking a stance that isn’t the most common, finding information that isn’t overused is much more accessible.

The first time I wrote a college English paper was in 2012. This was one of the most horrifying times of my life. English was one of my first college classes and one that I was least interested in at the time. All through high school, I knew being a writer was never going to be my profession. However, I knew English was essential to learn for many reasons other than being a writer. In addition, I was always a strong student with a high GPA; higher than most students. Except when it came to English class; I seemed to struggle with every paper. As time commenced it began to wear me down and lead me to doubt my abilities in other subjects.
