What do they care about most? With the information provided Jeff’s relation to the message is the need for the message, his family crisis, but The Human Resources office cares most about the shift being covered by Jeff, and not his personal problems. 7. What do I want my audience to think, do, feel, or believe after reading my message? I would hope the primary audience, the company, would empathize with the problems I am currently having, and not penalize me for caring for my mother during her illness. 8. Are there any benefits for my audience that is related to this message? The benefit for the audience I can think of would be to try and schedule the leave for after the event, so both parties can be satisfied. 9. What information do I need to include for the secondary audience? The secondary audience, Human Resources, requires paper work for incidences and emergencies. When analyzing the rhetorical situation of the Callahan Auto Parts memo there are six elements of the situation to be discussed: topic, purpose, speaker, audience, context, and culture. The topic of this memo is informing the employees of the upcoming retirement of the CEO/founder. The purpose is to inform the staff kindly about the upcoming change to head off any hesitation from the staff about Tommy Boy taking over and ensure a smooth transition occurs. The speaker is the founder and long-time CEO of the auto parts store. The audience is the staff and employees of the store, after they read the memo the goal is that they feel a little bit more at ease and less hesitant going into the change. They should also know how to handle the change over and what will partake while it occurs. The context of the memo is that me the founder is leaving and someone else is taking over that has less experience. I know before writing the memo the employees are probably going to be hesitant about the change because of Tommy Boy's lack of experience. The culture of the group is that they are a close community that feels comfortable with what is going on now.
Working night shift gives me the privilege to get lots of calls from the Emergency Room (ER). During the night, there is no Psychiatrist at the ER; hence, the first call comes to the unit to inquire about the Psychiatrist on-call and availability of space for admission. Let me mention that I rarely call to talk to any personnel in the ER unless I have a patient that has been transferred to the ER. However, since this is over a two-day communication trend, most calls from the ER were to give reports of patients that were transferred to my unit. The ER calls the physicians to get authorization to admit a patient. In turn, I get a call from the physician
I wanted you to know that I had a long talk with Erica today about her being late. She told me that she is responsible for her nephew who stays with them often. He has a mother and father who are both doctor’s and are about to have another baby. They rely on the family to take care of their children. I think it’s going to get worse and not better for her. She may need to adjust her schedule because I think they’ll depend on her more once the baby arrives. I think it might be better if she was moved to Marilyn’s shift. I explained that it’s not acceptable to continually come in late and asked her how she felt. She said she felt bad each time she had to call. She said she was going to speak to her family and see if they could all come
