In my line of work, communication is important. As a healthcare professional whatever information I choose to communicate must be clear and precise since a miscommunication could potentially harm a patient. This event occurred just a few days ago at work; I had a patient on a mechanical ventilator with an extensive medical history that included end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In June 2012, standing at Parade Rest in front of my supervisor, I had to explain myself for making another soldier feel belittled. Staff Sergeant Waschler, the Treatment Noncommissioned Officer, criticized my interpersonal skills due to the teaching method I used to explain patient assessments and documentation to a fellow soldier. Besides remorse, a plethora of emotions beleaguered my mind including fear, surprise, and guilt during this encounter. Perplexed by all of this, I felt absolute regret since I had no intention of making the soldier feel disparaged. Interpersonal communication is extremely important in the world. Being unable to effectively communicate limits your ability to succeed. Our group, although we all posses very different and strong personalities, worked very well together and were able to decide which items were essential to island survival. There were a few roles played in the group and some were even shared. Hopefully I can carry these reminders as I move into the workforce. Through these group activities, I learned how I work with others and the roles that emerge from a group.

A simple interaction between two people seems very basic, yet there are many things going on during the interaction within each of the participants. When I greet my daughter after she comes home from school with a simple ”how was school?” and “do you have any homework?” it seems very straightforward. On one level I am concerned whether or not she has had a good day, and what schoolwork does she still need to do, she could simply react with good, and yes or no. There is also something deeper, because she is family I want to help if her day was not good or celebrate if it was good, and also work with her to get through any homework. She may or may not realize these things, but her responses would bring a reaction that she would play

To me, empathy means seeing someone’s problem from their point of view to help give yourself a better understanding of their situation so you may help that person. Sometimes we do not understand someone’s problems until we put ourselves in their shoes and communicate with them. Communication involves how we interact with others. Correct communication involves both speaking and listening. We also must change our communicating style based on the party being communicated with. For example, you would use different vocabulary with a child than you might a fellow adult. Self-awareness is being conscious of your behavior and emotions and how they affect others. It is important to be self-aware so that you understand what is going on inside your own head and can control it. It is also important to be aware of how our behavior affects those around us.

During week one I flipped through material from week two and three, specifically chapter 6: Interpersonal Communication and Conversations. I discovered the section on feedfoward messages and phatic communication caught my attention. It stated that “small talk” opens the way for “big talk.” I also realized that chapters 3 and 5 Listening in Human Communication and Nonverbal messages coincided with small talk. I was never really into small talk or trying to hold a conversation, because I didn’t know how and was afraid because I didn’t know what to say. I continued reading chapter 6 and ran across a section called “How Do You Small Talk” and tested myself. Of course my scores were bad so I made this my challenge.

I mostly worked 4-5 days a week at the airport during my summer, winter, and spring breaks. My shift was about 9 hours long because of the variations of departing time each day. During school, I was an on-call employee and needed fill in when another employee could not come to work. The fun thing about working as a cashier in a gift shop in General Ford Airport was that most of the people I talked to were travelers, and some carried interesting stories and jokes with them from other parts of the world. Because I talked to a spectrum of people from different social background, race, ethics, and age, I was able to enhance my interpersonal skills with different people.

The most successful law enforcement officers are those that are able to find solutions and yet uphold enforcement without resorting to other use of force methods as most fights can be won with the right and positive attitude. Therefore, it is essential that the use of effective interpersonal communication is the numer one compliance tool and resource for law enforcement officers.

Effective leadership is directly related with the ability of the leaders to lead the organizational and interpersonal communication, working on its development. The leader designs not only his interaction with other employees, but also with people, who interact within the company. He needs to live and work in conditions of the phenomenon of group dynamics. Effective leadership is impossible without effective communication. This subject is studied at the junction of several interrelated disciplines (management, psychology, conflict resolution, etc.).
