China and Japan
From 1500 to 1800, China and Japan tried to politically and economically established their countries in very different ways. Japan fought war after war for a century before they changed their ways. China on the other hand slowly established a government and used education as a tool to be politically and economically strong. Japan would later do the same.
China was one of the most politically and economically strong countries during 1500 – 1800. The state was identified as family. It brought unity and integration. Manchu appointed two people, one Manchu, and one Chinese, to each key post in the central government. It was called Dyarchy. In 1683, Emperor K’ang Hsi took over Taiwan.
The Ming Ch’ing was known as the perfected late imperial system. They had a stronger emperor, better government finances and used Confucianism as an ideology. They had more academies to prepare people for the civil service exams, more bookstores, publishing flourished, and literacy outpaced population. Some of Chinas major markets were grain, salt, timber, iron, and cotton. Silk was a major market that was spread all over the world.
China used education and political growth to establish themselves. They grew slowly and were on of the strongest countries of their time. They were the strongest countries in international trade. They would stop growing in the late 19th century due to lack of technology at that time.
Japan had two different eras’s from 1500 to 1800. The Warring State’s era was an all out war inside Japan from 1467 to 1600. The other was the Tokugawa era from 1600 to 1868. The wars came to an end and Japan established Government control and unity under Tokugawa Ieyasu’s command.
The Warring States era started in 1467 when a dispute over the next Ashika Shogun arrised. It led to war between two lords who supported Bakufu. Other lords took the opportunity
Before the arrival of western powers, China was very stable, agricultural, and ethnocentric. They had many factories that produced silk, cotton, and porcelain with their natural resources: salt, tin, silver, and iron mines. They had no interest of trade or interaction with foreigners. From the early eighteenth century, European and American Imperialism spread throughout China with a goal to extend their nation’s power. China was one of many territories that undertook the changes of New Imperialism. By 1912, the country was governed by outside nations: Great Britain (mostly), Russia, Germany, France, and Japan. Their influence on China resulted malignantly on the country’s economy, political ties, and lifestyle; in spite of the few
The warring states period in Japan was one of constant military dispute. It started in 1467 and went for 136 years and only ended when all the clans unified under the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603. This period definitely had a large effect in the making of modern Japan because it was a time of growing culture and strong economics. The economy grew despite the wars raging and trade was big this indicates the sophisticated craft and manufacturing industries in Japan. These are the main reasons for the start of the warring states period and how this era affected modern Japan.
China’s population was growing rapidly, almost doubling between 750 and 1100. Because of this huge population boom, paper money was established, and the trade industry grew. There were many advances that were made, such as technological improvements
Although classical China and India had good institutions, they both pursued that characteristic in different directions. For example, China had developed one united dialect within their society, as India had come up with a variety of different languages. China basically developed solitary, with no outside help or advice until later on. So they grew with the society that they had created, no outside
China remains a current world super power that has been around for thousands of years. It was one of the first civilizations ever created and it has evolved into an enormous country. China is a large territory, but only 10% of the land can be farmed on. This continues to be a tremendous problem, especially with the large population that mostly lives in rural areas. In the past China was seen as a fragile nation that was still stuck in the past, although after the Four Humiliations this began to change. The Four Humiliations were a group of events that forced China to modernize due to the losses it faced. After the last of the four humiliations and the fall of the dynasty era during 1911, China began to catch up to the westernized world by modernizing their government, military, and education. The Chinese
b. The emperor Kangxi led the conquest of the island of Taiwan , home to Chinese and Japanese pirates, in 1681. Struggles with a new rival to the north and northwest, manchurians , led to constant conflict and extensive territorial gains for China.
a. The population of China approximately doubled between the start of the Ming dynasty in 1368 and its collapse and replacement by the Manchus in 1644 . This population increase, along with a reduction in government regulation, led to China’s 3rd Commercial Revolution, which lasted from 1500 and 1800. Economic advances during this time, which extended into the Qing era,
China economy started at 1978, the first economic growth reforms in 1979, the average annual Gross Domestic Product or for short GDP growth rate in China was about 5.3% from 1960-1978. During this time they had some excellent rulers that followed Confucianism and lead by example and were good to the people unlike some of the rulers in the past.
By the 900’s, the Japanese government began losing control over rural areas due to its weak ruler and the samurai warrior class stepped in to take control. This was due to a civil war called the “Hogen Rebellion” in 1156. This rebellion was due to conflicts regarding Imperial Japanese succession and unexpectedly laid the groundwork for the samurai clans to gain dominance. With both “would-be emperors” losing the Hogen Rebellion, the imperial government of Japan lost all of its remaining power. This led to the Heiji Rebellion in 1160 which was fought between two samurai clans, the Minamoto and Taira. With the victory of the Taira clan, the first samurai-led government (Shogunate) was formed. This type of government was controlled by the samurai clans, and the Emperor of Japan was only used as a figurehead to the government.
The empires of this time period had some innovative ideas and discoveries that permanently changed their nations and in some cases, the world. Both Rome and China had two unique and important cultural characteristics that completely changed their nations. For the Romans, their unique cultural characteristics were new ideas. The first of these new ideas, their unique Judicial System is the basis for many current judicial systems around the world, the other new idea, Christianity is now one of the worlds most practiced Religions. Whereas the unique cultural characteristics of China, namely the creation of paper and the formation of the “silk road” were more practical cultural characteristics, but no less impactful for both their
In china there has been no central rule in China for 70 years until the Song Dynasty created in 960. Things started to change in China, for example, the government started to aid the poor a lot more than what they have in the past. They were getting this money from the newly introduced income tax. This made a lot of people happy and everyone started to have more patriotism and pride. This pride gave the government a feel of legitimacy. Some of the major things the government is paying for is the roads, food, and education. Pottery at this time helps out the economy in China, because the pottery is so advanced that it was being exported for good money and it also led more people to come to China. Even though China was number one in the world for many things like technology and a sophisticated culture they were weak military wise (Holcombe p.127).
For example, farming lands were reclaimed, campaigns of reforestation were initiated, roads and canals were paved and dug, and irrigation and flood-prevention measures were constructed. Instead of focusing on trading and commercialism like their previous Mongolian rulers, the Ming reverted back to the traditional Chinese agrarian society.
Books were very important to China because they could now communicate with people all over the world. Printing more effectively, they could now print books faster with no errors. They could now print books 200 times faster than they could before. Books were printed for reading and other small things because it wasn't very commercial in China. People could now communicate lot easier over seas and in places very far away without having to physically see the people. China grew very large because people could now
China had gone through a major reformation that is called “Socialism with Chinese characteristics” that started in late 1978, sparked by a very influential politician and leader, Deng Xiaoping. The reformation is carried out in different stages. It is very important to understand these stages, as each stage is the prerequisite for China to move to another stage. Large-scale of government planning is heavily involved throughout the reformation. Despite having to go through financial crisis couple of times, globally and throughout Asia, China seemed to respond quickly and effectively to handle these difficult situations. As of today, China remains as an admiration and aspiration for not only countries in Asia, but also around the world.
