Economic Causes Of The French Revolution

First of all, the vulgus of France were not habituated with their basic human rights. Cahiers, a list of grievances about the king, taxing and voting involving the estates explains how the third estate was not provided with equal rights. The third estate owned most of the land and made up a large percent of the population, yet were not accustomed with the rights they deserved. They paid for the wealthy to live an excessive life and didn't get anything in return. This was unjust and unfair.

The French Society was divided into 3 classes, the Clergy, Nobles and Common People. The clergy was divided into 2 subgroups the higher clergy which was considered to be the top. They managed the churches, monasteries and educational institutions of France. They did not pay any tax to the monarch. The higher clergy lived in luxury. The lower clergy was considered the miserable. The nobility didnt pay any tax to the king. The nobility was also divided into two subgroups, which was court nobles and provincial nobles. The court nobles lived in luxury. They did not pay any heed towards the problems of the common people of their areas. The provincial nobles paid their attention towards the problems of the people. The first estate represented the church, the second estate represented nobility and king XVI was a part of both estates, and the third estate made up of ¨the rest¨ of the population and it included the poorest people but there were two parts of the third estate, the bourgeoisie and the non-educated which is why the lawyers, doctors, and other top educated people in the third estate represented the third estate in the General Estates meeting, “The Third Estate is the People and the People is the foundation of the State¨ this is a true statement because they basically made up everybody and half of the population. I personally think that the third estate is the foundation of the people as a whole. There were barely any opportunities for the third estate to speak up and let the king hear them out loud for once, so when they called the General Estates meeting the third estate felt like it was the only chance they had to voice how they felt. Later the king had cancelled the General Estates meeting because he was a disgrace to most of his supporters. Groups like the sans-culottes and the Jacobins rioting for what they wanted impacting the country socially, and Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette spending along with the poor harvests and loans the country owed.

Mortified and angry that the King would not turn a blind eye to starvation, unlivable circumstances and suffrage; the Third Estate marched down to an indoor tennis court and vowed to stay until they had a new constitution of rights. The Tennis Court oath was thus bestowed upon the King. The Third Estate; the poor and lowest class was the only one to be taxed, they had long felt unrepresented in the structure of social classes. Before the Enlightenment, the idea of personal power would never have been recognized by the lower class. Louis being an unsure and confused King helped the Revolution stand on its own two powerful feet. The people felt ready to attack and needed new resources for protection. With the making of a credible oath, the people assailed the building that represented the epidemy of their tyrannical government.
