The position of dean is more of a leadership than management position. The position requires elements of both, but the dean seems to chiefly focus on his role as a leader. Dr. Winistorfer recognizes his opportunity and potential to impact the college and deliberately works to grow and develop as a leader. The dean described participating in an ‘expensive leadership workshop’ out of his own desire. And at the workshop, other attendees questioned the relevance of his participation, but the dean had no uncertainty regarding the applicability to his position. Winistorfer’s experiences and take on leadership, he types as an ENTP. The tenor of his presentation coupled with evidence from the presentation’s content strongly suggests that the dean draws his energy from interacting with other people. Despite a day of traveling and chairing a board, his delivery was energetic and further intensified by the class’s attentiveness. On multiple occasions, the dean described an ever-present energy he feels when he gets to his office each day. Intuitive typed people see the big picture, a responsibility the dean identifies as part of his job. He defined a significant purpose of his position as keeping the college relevant and monitoring how it fits into the big picture of the university. Thinkers make decisions based on logic, principle to the circumstances at hand. Describing instances that required him to make decisions, the dean was very objective and clearly identified the good of the project as his main priority. However, the dean recognizes the role people and relationships play in his profession and consciously attempts to embody feeler tendencies. This is exemplified through his ‘walkabouts’ where he checks in on the college faculty. Discussing the recent dismissal of Virginia Tech’s Provost, and his own job, he is adamant that such leadership positions should only be occupied by individuals who can effectively enact growth and change.
