Ms. Harper, I have reviewed your paper and conferred with Dr. Meredith regarding this matter. Dr. Meredith contends that you submitted the essay on March 21, but it was initially due Feb. 15. Because the paper was submitted late, he originally disqualified it for credit. He then confirmed what you expressed to me in our conversation that he had neglected to take into consideration a conference that you two had previously had about altering your work schedule for the course and permitting you to make up the missed assignment. After you brought that to his attention, he accepted your essay and scored it according to its merits based upon the criteria articulated in the rubric. It is his contention that you were given until April 11 to rewrite the assignment for credit possibly improving the “Unsatisfactory” grade. Dr. Meredith commented that his mother had been frequently attacked by a rooster when she was small. On the grade sheet he also stated that his father was once charged by a bull. His inclusion of those experiences was to address the inaccuracy of the claim that animals do not attempt to harm humans. It appears from the grade sheet that the primary reason for disqualifying the essay was that the argumentation was “mostly fallacious or non-utilitarian” not that his parent’s had certain experiences.
