Down's Syndrome
Down's syndrome is a genetic condition involving an extra chromosome, this change occurs around the time of conception. A person with Down's syndrome has forty-seven chromosomes instead of the usual forty-six. A relatively common genetic disorder, Down's strikes 1 out of 600 babies. In 95 percent of all cases, the disorder originates with the egg, not the sperm, and the only known risk factor is advanced maternal age-at age 35, a woman has 1 chance in
117 of having a baby with Down's; at 40, her odds are 1 in 34. (Graves, 1990)
People with Down's syndrome all have a certain degree of learning disability . This means that they develop and learn more slowly than

* Vision: Three percent of newborns with Down syndrome will have dense congenital cataracts which should be removed early. Glaucoma is also common.
* Congenital Hypothyroidism: This condition is slightly more prevalent in babies with Down syndrome. It should be detected by the routine heelprick screen performed on all babies.
*Congenital dislocation of the hips: Joint laxity and hypotonia can combine to increase the incidence of hip dislocation, although true congenital dislocation is quite rare.
* Sensory deficits: Significant hearing impairments occur in the majority of children with Down syndrome. Annual audiometry and specialist consultation is recommended.
* Atlantoaxial instability: Up to 15% of children with Down syndrome will have evidence of instability of the atlantoaxial joint but in only a handful of cases will this instability result in an impingement on the spinal cord with resultant neurological signs.
* Physical growth: Physical development is invariably delayed in children with Down syndrome. A tendency towards obesity requires special attention to healthy diet and exercise habits in this group.
* Dental care: The teeth of children with Down syndrome tend to be small, irregularly spaced and misshapen. Early and frequent dental care is
From the perspective of a boy who has a brother with downs syndrome. My little brother Bryce who is 12 years old has downs syndrome, he has always been a major handful. There are advantages and disadvantages to having a brother like him. I hear lots of different opinions about people like him. It is hard to teach him how to do things. You might think it wouldn’t be that much of a difference between having a normal sibling and a special needs sibling, but there is.
As a child, Down syndrome was a part of my everyday life. I was watched after every day for the first ten years of my life by a women who was also looking after her sister who had Down syndrome. To me it was nothing unusual. It wasn’t until about eighth grade that I realized that to other people it wasn’t normal, it had a negative connotation. Growing up around a person who has Down syndrome made me see things differently than others. Once I realized not everyone else’s perspectives were the same as mine I became really aware of how others treated and reacted to people with Down syndrome. Its years later and I came across a story told by a women named Bethany Van Delft about Down syndrome.
mother could have a Down Syndrome baby even though there was never any sign of
Children are our future; our future scientists, doctors, teachers, president and so much more. It is hard not to notice the number of young parents nowadays that have children. the average age range for mothers giving birth is 20-34. With the current up rise of babies being born to young mothers, I could not help but think about how age plays a factor into birth effects. Down syndrome is the most common single cause of human birth defects. The most common form of Down syndrome is known as trisomy 21, a genetic condition where individuals have 47 chromosomes in each cell instead of 46. Trisomy 21 is caused by an error in cell division called nondisjunction, which leaves a sperm or egg cell with an extra copy of chromosome 21 before or at conception.
After trying for many years, a woman was successful in becoming pregnant. As a component of one of her routine pre-natal appointments, she was tested for fetal abnormalities. A blood test confirmed that her baby has Down syndrome and her physician recommended aborting the fetus. Down syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality that leads to intellectual disability, weak muscle tone and a unique facial characteristic. Down syndrome children often have increased risks for heart defects and other medical conditions such as gastric reflux. Taking care of a child with Down syndrome can be both mentally and physically exhausting. Taking care of a child with Down syndrome can be equally rewarding.
John Langdon Down was the first to write an accurate description of Down syndrome . Down syndrome is one of the most common disorders among children in America, which is why it is so well known. Down syndrome has three different types: trisomy 21, mosaicism, and translocation(1). When it comes to the different types trisomy 21 is the most common. This is when every cell has an extra chromosome 21 and babies with this type tend to have a wide variety of different symptoms. Mosaicism is the next common form of Down syndrome. When it comes to this type the individual has extra chromosome 21 in only some of their cells. Babies with mosaicism tend to have fewer symptoms. For translocation, the kids who have this only have one extra piece of chromosome
Although there is no technique to prevent the onslaught of Down syndrome, it can nevertheless be identified prior to a child’s birth. Many of the health issues associated with this illness can be treated, and a multitude of resources can utilized
Down Syndrome (otherwise called Trisomy 21) is the most widely recognized hereditary issues that causes a long lasting scholarly disability, formative postponements and different issues. Down Syndrome influences individuals of any age, races, and financial levels. It is a standout amongst the most as often as possible happening chromosomal variations from the norm, happening once in each 800 to 1000 live births. More than 350, 000 individuals in the United States alone have Down Syndrome. My objective for this paper is to discuss the three unique sorts of Down Syndrome and to discuss the contrasts between them.
Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder that occurs when a persons 46 chromosomes abnormally divides into 47 chromosomes, creating a full or partial 3rd copy of the chromosome 21.
The incident that led to this article was the first woman with Down syndrome to walk down the runway. Jamie Brewer is an actress in American Horror Story who started the path for women with Down syndrome to become a model. Her disability is the centerfold of this article and it discourages the belief system of history.
Do you feel like your child is having trouble developing? Is your child having trouble learning to speak, read, or walk? If so, you may want to get a screening test and a diagnostic test to see if your child has down syndrome.
It was September of 2015. My mother had a surprise for us, and it was our job to guess what the surprise was. It was four months from Christmas, why couldn't she wait to give it to us then? I racked my brain looking for a reasonable answer, but I couldn't find one. The surprise might be a new toy, but she would have saved it for Christmas. Maybe a dog, but we already had three, and we definitely didn't need another one. Then, out of nowhere the idea popped into my head. I knew what the surprise was!
Due to the fact that advanced age pregnancies can result in chromosomal deformities, Down Syndrome is a high possibility for the child bore by an advanced age mother; this is what research has proven according to Haddow et al (1994), who all practice in the field of medicine and/or are researchers in diseases among newborns. Physicians in the U.S., who are advising women about the consequences of advanced age pregnancies, tested and
Also, there is a greater risk of a child having Down syndrome if the mother is over 35 years old.
At the ages of 20 to 24 the chance of a baby with down syndrome is 1 in 1667 and the chance of chromosomal abnormalities is 1 in 526. This risk increases in the ages 30 to 34 with the chance of a baby with down syndrome being 1 in 952 and the chance of any chromosomal abnormalities being 1 in 358. When a woman reaches her 40s the chances of having a baby with down syndrome or any chromosomal abnormalities rises with every year. For example, when she is 40 the chances of having a baby with down syndrome is 1 in 106 but by the time she reaches 44 it will be 1 in 38. Also the chances of having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities at the age of 40 is 1 in 66 and just four years later is 11 in 26.
