1 out of 691 children born have Down Syndrome. Do you know what Down Syndrome is? Many have Down Syndrome, and it is one of the most common chromosomal conditions. Though to many, Down Syndrome is not something that they understand, and let’s be honest, it is hard to understand. There are many misconceptions about Down Syndrome simply because people are misinformed about it. When things are harder to comprehend, we just follow along with the norm. It is alright to not know something but you have to look into it before you judge people or things. We as a society need to figure out more about Down Syndrome. Although, Down Syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal conditions, many don’t understand the causes of it and they generalise all people with Down Syndrome.
Down syndrome was found by Dr. John Langdon Down in 1866, he found that a group of specific traits, such as upward slanted eyes, flattening of the back of the

According to a recent Vanderbilt Kennedy Center study, families have a lower divorce rate, if they have someone with Down Syndrome (Down Syndrome Misconceptions vs. Reality). This was one of the largest study to date, it had 647 families participating in the study. This shows that they are happy, because if they weren’t they would have gone separate ways. Many believe having a child with a disability cause the siblings harm or slow them down. But according a to recent study published in the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research found no long-term detrimental effects to siblings (Global Down Syndrome foundation). Studies have documented that those sibling are more empathetic, tolerant, and are aware of more. A multitude have jobs and live by themselves. Based on the severity of their Down Syndrome, they could have jobs at supermarkets and many more jobs, thus supporting themselves and being more
Did you know that close to 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome every year in the United States? The most common type of chromosomal condition is Down syndrome and there are a few different types of this condition, along with, several different traits that are displayed with this condition. I have always been interested in the topic of Down syndrome and thought it was a great idea to study more about it for my speech. First, I will tell you about what Down syndrome is and who discovered it. Second, I will talk to you about some symptoms and characteristics of this chromosome disorder. Third, I will discuss the 3 different types of this condition, and lastly, how they diagnose Down syndrome prenatally.
A person with downs syndrome has extra chromosome. The defect usually involves the twenty first chromosome. With this chromosome defect you do not develop like the average human being. With Down syndrome you have a short body stature and your face has a very broad profile, the most noticeable way to tell if someone has Down syndrome is their ears and their eyes are aligned differently than someone who doesn’t have downs syndrome. When you are growing up with Down’s syndrome your speech develops much slower and it is much harder to annunciate your words. some over time can develop great speech and some
It is still unknown why this happens. Down syndrome is viewed as a very rare disorder. It is one of the most common chromosomal condition. According to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), it is estimated that there are about 400,000 people in the United States with down syndrome and one in 641 babies are born with down syndrome. The likelihood of a 20-year-old women giving birth to a child with down syndrome is one in 2,000. The chances of a 35-year-old women giving birth to a child with down syndrome is one in 350. “More and more Americans are interacting with individuals with Down syndrome, increasing the need for widespread public education and acceptance,” (NDSS). About 38 percent of Americans know someone who has down syndrome. Down syndrome is more common than people
Down syndrome (known as Trisomy 21) is a genetic disorder caused when cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21. This genetic disorder occurs in about 1 of 800 live births. Down syndrome was first characterized a separate form of mental disability by John Langdon Down in 1862. By the 20th century the disability had become the most recognizable form of mental disability. These individuals have gone through a lot. In ancient times, many infants with this disability were killed or abandoned. The people with Down syndrome used to be called Mongolian idiots and the syndrome was called mongolism. This comes from the people thinking that Down syndrome individuals resembled Mongolians. It doesn’t only affect the individual
In 1866, a British physician, John Langdon Down, for whom the syndrome is named, first described Down Syndrome, as ?Mongolism.? Down was a superintendent of an asylum for children with mental retardation. He observed a set of children with common features who were distinct from children with mental retardation. The term Down Syndrome didn?t become the accepted term until the early 1970s. More was learned about the condition in 1959, when French Pediatrician/Geneticist Profess Jerome Lejeune discovered that individual with Down syndrome had an extra chromosome. Shortly thereafter, chromosome studies were developed to confirm the diagnosis of Down syndrome (Wright, 2011).
It's hard to believe a random error in cell division known as nondisjunction can be the reason for so many birth defects. This one mistake is the cause of 1 in 691 babies being born with what is known as Down Syndrome. In every cell in the human body, there is a nucleus. Typically there are twenty three chromosomes in each nucleus. Down Syndrome occurs when there is extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. Down Syndrome is a chromosomal condition that causes low muscle tone, small stature, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm. Although, each person with Down Syndrome is a unique individual and may have these characteristics to different degrees.
Down syndrome is a congenital chromosomal disorder during maternal meiosis. This is one of the most common chromosomal disease that has been confirmed (Epstein, 2013). Down syndrome causes some symptoms in children’s physical and mental aspects, which have significant differences with other people. It may cause the life of the child is abnormal and cannot live independently in the future. With the increased population of children with Down syndrome in Australia, it becomes prominent that they strongly impact on their family and society in both positive and negative ways. This article will introduce some basic information about Down syndrome, discuss its early intervention and ethical issues of having a baby with Down syndrome, and result in coming up with views in regards to terminating or continuing with the pregnancy of a foetus diagnosed with Down syndrome.
It’s symtoms include physical growth impedement, facial and body abnormality, and intellectual blockage. Down syndrome would be considered a common disorder in humans. It is estimated to have 1000 babies born each year with down syndrome due to genetic errors. Down Syndrome was first described by British doctor John Langdon Down in 1866; and the cause was discovered by French researcher Jean Esquirol in 1959, which was the extra chromosome 21.
Trisomy 21 is a strange genetic disorder because it happens randomly and has no set precedent, the parents of a child with down syndrome are usually mentally and physically abled. The only trend that has been linked with the development of down syndrome is the mother's age when the child is conceived. The average risk of having a child with Down syndrome is 1 out of 750 live births. Mothers in their early twenties when pregnant have a risk of 1 out of 1,500 of having a child with trisomy 21 and women over 35 have a risk factor of 1 out of 70, the risk factor rises with the age of the mother. Down Syndrome was first discovered by Dr. John Langdon Down, however Dr. Down misinterpreted how Down Syndrome occurs. How Down syndrome occurs was only discovered little under 60 years ago in 1959. With the many complications with down syndrome and little to no knowledge of
In the 1900s people born with Down syndrome were not expected to live lone the life expectancy was between the ages of 9-12 years of age. It wasn’t until 1930 that several researchers came together a discovered the basis of Down syndrome and proposed that the illness may be from the result of a chromosomal anomaly. J. Lejeune, R. Turpin, and M. Gautier in 1959 demonstrate that Down syndrome was associated with nondisjunction which is the failure of chromosome pairs to separate properly during cell division.
We all love amazing smiles and infectious eyes and hugs. Down syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels. Who are we to judge when we all bleed the same blood. Down syndrome is only a part of them and not how they are defined. No one is greater than another no matter what the situation. In every cell in the human body there is a nucleus, where genetic material is stored in genes. Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes. Typically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.
Down Syndrome is a developmental disorder caused by an error in the process of cell division. This disorder is characterized by an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy)(Segal & Pesco, 2015). It is the most common chromosomal disorder and affects 1 in 700 live births (Ramia, Musharrafieh, Khaddage, & Sabri, 2014). According to Segal and Pesco (2015), Down Syndrome is characterised by physical features such as distinct facial characteristics, low muscle tone; conditions such as congenital heart disease; and Intellectual Disability with IQs typically ranging from 30 to 70.
Down syndrome is caused by an abnormality with the 21st chromosome. It was first observed by John Langdon Down in 1866. It was not until 1959 that it would be classified as a chromosomal disease by french physician Jérôme Lejeune. According to the article, “Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of
Some symptoms of Down Syndrome is short neck, flattened facial profile and nose, can have a small head, ears, and mouth, wide short hands with short fingers, and white spots in the color part of the eye. They may have poor judgement, impulsive behavior, and delayed language and speech development. When a child has down syndrome, the physical development is slower than a normal child. It will take kids with down syndrome longer to learn how to sit, walk, and talk rather than a child with no down syndrome. (https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/down/conditioninfo/symptoms)
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2013), approximately 6,000 babies are born in the U.S. with Down syndrome, or 1 out of 691 live
