Domestic violence is the physical, mental, emotional, and/or sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power. A form of domestic violence is child abuse. According to Child Protective Services, each year more than three million reports of child abuse are made in the United States which involves more than six million victims. Cases can involve more than one child. Groups who are generally targeted are young females under the age of eighteen who are seen as vulnerable and small. Men, who are usually the perpetrators, look for young girls who are alone so they can abduct them without a witness. “The Girl in the Closet”, introduced later in the essay, is a well known story of a young girl from Texas who endured six years of horrific abuse and torture. The United States has one of the worst records of child abuse. According to statistics, five children die per day due to child abuse. One out of three girls/one out of five boys will be sexually abused before the age eighteen. While ninety percent of the children know the abuser. sixty-eight percent of that ninety are abused by a family member. The abusers usually are between the ages of eighteen and forty-four. More than four children die daily due to child abuse and neglect; seventy percent being under the age of three years old.
