Discussion of William Shakespeare's Macbeth Essay

Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's most dramatic tragedies which made it necessary for Shakespeare to create tension and suspense throughout the play. The play was written during the reign of King James 1st, and because of this the themes of the play have a striking resemblance to the period. Common beliefs in the 1600s are upheld throughout, such as witchcraft; King James felt threatened by ‘witches’ and this resulted in unmerciful killing of many women. This play consistently features murder, influenced by four women: Macbeth’s own wife, Lady Macbeth, and three witches who will tell prophecies that eventually turn both Macbeths mad.

Macbeth by William Shakespeare depicts the transformation of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth throughout the play. There is a clear change in each character’s persona and the audience is able to interpret the affects this conversion has on the outcome of each character and their choices throughout the play. However, the nature of violence that takes place throughout Shakespeare’s plays is in relation to“the source of the killing of the soul”(Macbeth and the Nature of Evil). In Macbeth, Macbeth is known as a superhuman warrior, the characteristics of being brave and having ambition. The main reason evil stirs up violence can be seen as examples in Macbeth and Julius Caesar, which is caused by “evil being incompatible with humanity” (Shakespeare’s Play Themes). The murders in Macbeth and Julius Caesar are both examples of the rotation of the natural order.
