In many discussions, the barrier of the American Dream is discrimination. From different religions and workplaces, to the uprising of “Black lives matter” movement, there are many people who believe to be minorities who find it difficult to achieve the American Dream. On one hand, there are benefits for people from different cultures, but on the other hands they are still being perceived incapable of certain activities. History has shown they’ve made great strides of becoming part of the prosperity of the American Dream, however they are still not getting the credit they deserve. The law forbids discrimination of religion to any aspect including hiring, firing, pay, job, promotions, layoffs and other terms or conditions of employment, however that does not stop it from happening. ABC news journalist, Morgan Winsor, publishes an article about Muslim employers stating they have been able to take prayer breaks until “a new policy beginning on Jan. 25” where “there is no additional accommodations for prayer” that is affecting not only their job but now their religious beliefs. Muslim employees are enraged that the Wisconsin Arien Company’s new policy is discriminating their right for prayer. The employee’s filed a discrimination report to U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) hoping for a solution. The employees are being forced out, unless they obey the new policy, of Arien’s company that use to let Muslim workers take prayer breaks. The Title Vll of the Civil Right Act of 1964 requires, “employers to accommodate religious beliefs.” Winsor continues to state, “Arien’s management allegedly threatened to fire those employees who continued to pray beyond the scheduled breaks.” United States of America prohibits religious discrimination, especially when its affects citizen’s opportunity for employment. From riots and increasing crime rates to public gatherings, all these are impacting peoples’ way of life. Juliana M. Horowitz and Gretchen Livingston, expert reporters for Pew Research Center, state that “roughly two-thirds (64%) of people (…) understand the movements goals” and that “about half (46%) of whites ages 30 to 49, and even (…) 50 to 64 (37%) and those 65 and older (26%), express support for the movement.” Black Lives Matter is a chapter-based national organization that’s working to suppress a racial and social issue within the United States. The movement is a unique contribution that goes beyond the killings of black people by police. With two-thirds of the nation’s support, it indicates that the issue is real within the societies; that blacks, latinos and other different cultures are targeted. In another article by Jon Swaine, criminal reporter for the Guardian and Ciara McCarthy, a journalist for the Guardian, declares that, “black males 15-34 were nine times more likely than other Americans to be killed by law enforcement officers.” According to the Guardian “U.S. police killed at least 258 black people in 2016” and “about 169 were unarmed” which was recorded in company’s project “The Counted.” More research by organizations are beginning to notice the extremities for the BLM uprisings.
