Differences Between New England And Chesapeake Colonies

New England and Chesapeake were two English colonies founded in the New World. These colonies started in different ways and continued to function very differently. In the 1700s, New England and Chesapeake colonies developed in very different ways; this development was a direct reflection of the families, governments, and religion found in the colonies. The settlers of New England and Chesapeake came from England; however these people differed in many ways. New England brought over families that included wives, children, and even servants (Document B). They believed that unity of the colonists would result in a thriving healthy community. This sense of unity allowed the settles to create a home, not just place to live. Chesapeake brought over individuals (Document C). They did not have any form of companionship or family. New England formed rules before they got off the ship. This allowed every settler to understand what type of community they were a part of. The colonists in New England practiced a direct democracy. This allowed all settlers to have an input in the way the community functioned. Fair wages and prices were expected in New England (Document E). This was one way the colonists were expected to allow everyone to have the same opportunities. Not one individual could be wealthy, but everyone had the chance to make a decent wage. The political ideas found in New England proved to be effective for the colony. Chesapeake did not have structured rules for the settlers. This was one way that proved Chesapeake was not a community. The colony could not even unite the settlers by providing laws each colonist understood and obeyed. Representatives from Chesapeake formed the House of Burgesses. These representatives made decisions and ran the colonies. The representatives were usually wealthy and the decisions they made mostly always favored to
