Before starting this project, I knew very little about photography, photographers, or exactly how much impact photographical images have had on our society. I have never taken a photography class, or researched too in depth about specific pictures or photographers. This project has allowed me to delve deeper into the world of photography in order to understand just how much influence pictures can have over society’s beliefs, emotions, and understandings’. I have have chosen two highly influential photographers, Diane Arbus and Dorothea Lange, who I have found to both resonate with me and perfectly capture human emotions in way that moves others. Diane Arbus was a photographer in the 1950’s and 60’s. Starting out as a fashion photographer, Arbus quickly moved on to photographing more impactful pictures, usually of societal outsiders (“The Cost of Diane,” 2016). With striking images of “freaks,” as she once named her subject, Arbus perfectly depicted feelings of loneliness and struggles with identity. I believe Arbus resonates with me so much because of her uncanny ability to showcase such complex and intense human emotions through photography repeatedly. I came across many pictures that created many different feelings within me, and came to better understand the world of art and its impact on both a personal and societal level. Learning about the lives of Diane Arbus and Dorothea Lange allowed me to view their art in different way than I would have otherwise. I found them both the be fascinating women, and am glad I took this change to learn more about them and their artwork.
