Demographics The study included data from 6,800 participants who had a mean age of 29. On average 61 % of households were headed by men. Only about 3.9 % of participants in this study were smokers. The majority of participants were not employed and the majority reported that their highest level of education was up to the secondary level. Most participant residences were in urban areas where houses are mostly made of concrete with zinc roofs and cement or tiled flooring. 68 % of participants report using bottled water as their main source of drinking water. This still leaves 32% of the population drinking water from sources that are likely contaminated. Most participants reporting having electricity, but only about 60 % have refrigeration in their homes and only about half of the participants reported having a toilet with a piped sewer system in their home. For this reason the Dominican Republic could benefit from preconception care. Preconception care is defined as any intervention provided to women or a couple regardless of pregnancy or desire for pregnancy in efforts to improve maternal, new born and infant outcomes. These interventions aim to modify risks including those related to social, biomedical and behavioral determinates in order to better ensure positive outcomes(Dean et al., 2013). Research has found management and prevention of these associated risks have a greater impact when integrated into preconception care than prenatal care alone. Preconception care can especially impact women in resource poor settings like the Dominican Republic. A study found that preconception nutrition interventions that included diet diversity, micronutrient supplementation/fortification, and achieving optimal BMI was found to be the among the highest ranked research options with regard to functionality and
Brindlee Mountain Middle School is a small rural school in Marshall County Alabama located within eight miles of Guntersville, Alabama and Arab, Alabama. BMMS was constructed sixteen years ago to consolidate Grassy and Union Grove junior high schools. This consolidation led to the reorganization of Grassy and Union Grove into elementary schools serving grades kindergarten through fourth grade. In 2004 Brindlee Mountain High School was created, followed by another reorganization of Grassy and Union Grove elementary schools into a primary school serving grades kindergarten through second grade and an elementary school serving grades three through five. In 2011, Union Grove and Grassy schools underwent another transformation when they were renamed Brindlee Mountain Primary School and Brindlee Mountain Elementary School respectively. These changes successfully created the Brindlee Mountain feeder pattern.
One important health disparity is the lack of prenatal care amongst women in socially disadvantaged populations. These predominately include women of minorities, women who have a low income, and the location these women live in. This health disparity is important to address because research has shown that women who receive prenatal care are more likely to conceive babies of a healthy birth weight and have low infant mortality rates than those women who do not receive this prenatal care ("Putting Women 's Health Disparities on the Map," 2009). Therefore, health disparities amongst women in need of prenatal care have lead to preventable infant mortalities amongst women in vulnerable populations. Three reasons why this health disparity is important to address include the following: health disparities in prenatal care lead to lack of access to prenatal care to women in vulnerable populations, there are increased adverse health outcomes for both the infant and mother, and there are excess medical expenses that could otherwise have been prevented. Because “prematurity is the leading cause of newborn death in the United States” (“Healthy Mothers and Healthy babies,” 2013), finding and developing a solution will be extremely beneficial and needs to begin with addressing prenatal care.
How Can These Challenges Be Addressed. The changing of disability rates, the size of the economy and efforts at privatization may affect how much of an economic burden these programs will impose in the future. As a result, household financial wealth in the world's major economies will be roughly $31 trillion lower in 20 years than it would have been if historical demographic trends had persisted. Raising the retirement age, easing restrictions on immigration, encouraging families to have more children, and achieving faster economic growth will have little impact on this shortfall. To fill it, households and governments will have to increase their savings rates and national economies will have to allocate capital more efficiently, thereby boosting returns (Farrell, 2005).
Pekin Illinois is a relatively small community located in Central Illinois half way between St. Louis and Chicago. It boasted a total community population of 33857 during the last census period of 2008. The total population consisted of roughly a 50/50 male to female ratio with a median age of 37.1 and represented 94.4% Caucasian, 2.4% African American, 1.9% Hispanic and 1.1% Asian races. Due to this population mix many of the culturally and racially indicated diseases states, such as type 2 diabetes, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular diseases are not as prevalent as coronary heart disease and other related diseases such as heart failure, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and obesity.
I started off by gathering research for the demographic factors that would be easy to find for both cities by looking at the US Census database as well as the American Community Survey database. I was able to get through this process fairly quickly because the US Census publishes ‘quick facts’ about each city and I was able to do a side by side comparison between San Jose, CA and St. Louis, MO. After filling out the main demographics, it was time to fill the table with health prevalence rates, number of uninsured people, food insecurity and etc. I was able to find a lot of the health rankings through BRFSS. CDC and County Health Rankings (refer to table for specific information). I used County Health Rankings in the case where I wasn’t able

Benjamins and Whitman (2014) were able to conduct a research study in four different communities in the state of Chicago that examined the correlation between disparities or discrimination among racial/ethnic groups and it’s effect on the quality of healthcare and outcomes. The title of the study is the Relationship between discrimination in health care and health outcomes among four race/ethnic groups. Healthcare disparity is one of the major issues that the healthcare system in U.S is facing and the authors of this study stated that although this issue is huge, not many researches have been done on the issue. Benjamins and Whitman (2014) collected the data from the Sinai Improving Community Health Survey. The data was aimed to document the health of six Chicago communities (Benjamins & Whitman, 2014). The data was chosen to reflect major racial/ethnic population in Chicago.
“Reports show that nearly 50% of Americans under 18 are minorities. The trend projects a reversal in the population where by 2030, the majority of people under 18 will be of color and by 2042, nonwhites will be the majority of the population.” America’s growth and projected increase of population diversity can be contributed to the fact that America is moving toward a new standard in which diversity and individuality are encouraged. People may feel that America is trapped in a box of conformity and uniformity; however, America has stepped outside this box and embraces diversity because we have been assimilating over time and America notices and embraces it.
People in Canada today can expect to live longer than ever before. Once you make it to 65, Statistics Canada data (2007-2009) suggest that you can live another 20.2 years, on average. In 2015, Canada have more senior people aged 65 and older (16%) than people aged 15 and younger (15%). By 2050, the proportion of the elderly will be one in four (25%). Both the prevalence of chronic illness and cost of acute care increase with age as elderly people requires expensive hospital-delivered diagnosis and treatment. Health spending in Canada rose from $75 billion dollars per year in 1996, to about $190 billion in 2010. On the other hand, aging population and Canadians retiring earlier today than they did in the past together implies fewer tax dollars
Of the 924 residents surveyed early on in the project, almost 45 percent did not treat their water. Furthermore, those most directly affected by the poor water quality did not seem aware of the risks involved in using it. The survey also revealed that almost all families stockpiled their water most often, in any container at hand.
Though, I do not have an interest in specializing in women’s health, the article reminded me that in any area we should be promoting preconception counseling in child bearing ages. Preconception visits assist in assessing risky behaviors and promoting alternatives behaviors, such as safe sex
For my infographic project, this year, I have researched and studied the impact of video game towards the time children spend doing homework. My main goal was to understand if video games act as a negative distraction towards children and if they prevent children from getting their work done. To collect all my data and, be able to answer my question, I employed both in person and online surveys. I spent a week going around my neighborhood asking both parents and children to answer a survey that I created. I later organized all my data and created an infographic that I used to diagram my data and summarize my conclusion.
Moreover, nurses having perceptions that SUs with CEP are often aggressive, drug seeking and difficult to manage can be depicted as their overall judgmental attitudes towards this population group. Nurses with this type of negative, judgmental and stigmatizing attitudes fail to provide collaborative and optimal care for this population group. Moreover, nurses with this type of attitudes failed to create a good therapeutic relationship with SUs resulting in mistrust, disempowerment, poor health outcomes and avoidance of SUs to engage with services (Chu & Galang, 2013).
. The Summary statistics by race and gender are presented in table 1. The sampling frame of this study conducted by NAMCS was through the demographic, state and regional variation; however, there is sampling error due to incomplete responses as well as non responses of the population sample. This study has a lot of limitations, especially on the demographic background of the sample, 25.8 % did not fill out the demographic and leave the questionnaire blank. The data explored for race and ethnic is the imputed options, because of the missing or incomplete responses in the demographics. The cross table count is the statistical association between categorical variables like age and race. The lowest hypertension visits, 16.9%, were done by Non-Hispanic
Prenatal care is widely accepted as an important element in improving pregnancy outcome. (Gorrie, McKinney, Murray, 1998). Prenatal care is defined as care of a pregnant woman during the time in the maternity cycle that begins with conception and ends with the onset of labor. A medical, surgical, gynecologic, obstretic, social and family history is taken (Mosby's Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Dictionary, 1998). It is important for a pregnant woman as well as our society to know that everything that you do has an effect on your baby. Because so many women opt not to receive the benefits of prenatal care, our society sees the ramification, which include a variety of complications primarily
