Evaluate the economic and political impact of big business on the United States in the period from 1870 to 1900. In the period of 1870 to 1900 big business in the United States had tremendous impact on: politics as lobbying and corruption ran rampant, economics as big business controlled the economic trends of the era, and the personal lives of people as they were directly influenced by these businesses' actions. The time period of 1870 to 1900, most commonly known as the Gilded Age (a term coined by Mark Twain in his 1873 book: The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today) was ripe with political corruption as demonstrated by documents 2 and 3. Document 2 written by the "People's Party" in 1892 was meant to show the platform of the party to
The growing corporations in America dominated most of the economy, creating a large gap between the rich and the poor. During this time period food, lightening, and fuel prices declined significantly, and the cost of living
Between 1865 and 1939 not all Americans accepted big business dominance. In the beginning of this era
The Gilded Age became known as an era between the 1870’s and the 1890’s. The word Gilded Age was described by a well-known American Literature author named Mark Twain. Mr. Twain pointed out what the word means, claiming that although on the outside society may seem perfect and in order, below what we can’t observe, there is poverty, corruption, and many other matters between the rich and poor. While the rich were getting richer, the poor were getting poorer. The Gilded Age brought about a rise in technology, which transformed the United States both positively and negatively. As we approach the middle of the 21st century, we see a new Gilded Age, in which technology continues to transform the United States and change the lives of the American
America developed as an industrial and agricultural colossal in the late nineteenth century. Beatified with limitless pure natural resources, remarkable technologies, ruthless population growth, entrepreneurial energy, and little to no government interference the United States cultivated very rapidly and changed perilously than ever before. Only within three or four generations after the Civil War the primarily base rural nation ranked fourth as the world’s main commercial, agricultural, and industrial power. In the 1900s the United States controlled global markets in steel, oil, wheat, and cotton. Businesses grew greatly in size and power. Social tensions and political corruption aggravated the rising scale of business enterprise.
The period of time between the late 1800s and the early 1900s was a time of rapid industrialization in the United States. The great American author, Mark Twain, dubbed this period the “Gilded” Age. Gilded items are covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint, which hides all that is inside. This idea is evident in this time period because America’s golden paint, or industrialization, was hiding all the economic and social problems on the inside. Although the Gilded Age brought along great advances in industrialization, it brought many new problems that were never experienced before. The politics of this time period came up short when it came to dealing with the economic and social issues it faced.
Taking it place in the first years of the 1800s, the book was actually written in the late 1800s, the last quarter of the nineteenth century. During this time, great prosperity emerged in the America, this was a time of wealth to many people as they were becoming richer and richer; however, “hundreds of others sank into monotonous, dangerous jobs for miserable wages” (Moss and Wilson, 4). The inequalities that Twain eventually realized inspired him to coauthored the book Gilded Age. The work peels off the “gilded coat” of the late 1800s to show the real society, the poor people, and the rich-quick people. “Gilded Age” is an example of Twain’s genre satire on the society, the people and the ideas they fostered (Moss and Wilson 4). The Victorian culture at that time was also spreading to America, setting the standards of behaviors, peaking, acting, and writing.
Only fifty eight percent of eligible voters participated in the 2016 election. The main thing people of the time were interested in was economic development. Two major political moves were enacted to stimulate the economy. The first one was “granting corporate charters to private businesses to promote private investment in roads, bridges, canals, railroads, banks, iron mining, etc.”3 The second was “using private corporations for public purposes by promoting economic development thought to be for the good of all.”3 Westward expansions grew, along with the economy.
Hope you are having a great summer. I took ECON188 in spring, and it was an amazing experience. Your rich knowledge and insight into the business world really opened my eyes. There is a question that I have debated with myself for a long time. I think you probably are the only person who could help me answer this question. The question is: Business Econ or Econ?
I agree that “most historians would say that Americans responded to the dramatic growth of big business in the late nineteenth century with a mixture of fear and greed” supports that statement because most of the development and big project had been successful in this period. Edwin Drake discovered oil in 1859 which helped in transportation and different uses. Telephone and electricity were invented in this period which helped in the industrials part of the area. Because to develop a country industrialization plays a vital role. Fear and greed helps to encourage and go further because at that time U.S. was a developing country which helped them to be better than other countries like: Europe. The first railroad was made and later it was expanded
Aristotle once quipped, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” It has been proven, in my opinion, that his assumption is correct. We must make decisions and go after our dreams to make ourselves happy. I believe that being a part of the Business Scholars program is one brick in the foundation of my happiness.

In this technologically advanced, overpowering, fastly paced world we live in we often find it near impossible to keep up. Corporations like Apple, Domino's, Walmart etc… are expanding to extremes beyond what anyone has dealt with before. Small businesses are being put face to face with obstacles and struggles of competing with what appears to be the “god’s” of business; how can they keep a staff, manage their time, finances etc...?. Even though there are rules, laws, and regulatory corporations in place to keep track and slight control over these larger firms, they can still unintentionally, or for that matter intentionally over power and drive the smaller businesses out. It’s becoming a daily struggle for these local/small
The past century saw major developments in the economic, social, political and cultural life of the United States as it grew from a burgeoning industrial nation to the world’s leading superpower. By the 1900s, giant firms such as Carneige Steel, The Standard Oil Trust, among a few others controlled 2/5th of the nation’s marketing capital. This resulted in a rapid increase in the number of industrial workers and even though the American society was growing wealthier overall, there were several thousands that still lived not only in poverty but also far below the poverty lines. It all began with rapid economic growth that was fueled with technological advancements in the field of electricity, communications, business machines, farm and
The Gilded age, took place between 1870 and 1890, was a period known as a time that was not Americas brightest for the common people. Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner’s book helped create the term that represented something that is deceptive in its value. The Gilded age was a time that represented an unchained free market due to very little to no intervention from the federal government. Companies like the railroad and oil corporation controlled politics that influenced their growth; Corruption was unchecked. Another aspect of the Gilded age was the amount of voters who showed up to cast ballots. Also, the Presidential elections were matched very closely due to the massive party rallies. The corruption of the Gilded age even reached the Presidential elections with candidates like James G. Blaine being caught up in corruption.
When Mark Twain coined the term “Gilded Age” for the years 165-1900 he was doing more than giving a sarcastic name to this time period. Twain ingeniously combined both the era’s widespread corruption with its tremendous growth. It was a time of political upheaval, western expansion, transitioning roles of women, increased education, new forms of media, and urbanization, although while all of those factors were significant parts of the the time, one industry and technology saw a startling and almost unbelievable shift to its industry. During the Gilded Age the United States went through one of its biggest, most influential periods of growth and discovery in its history, although along with the tremendous expansion came huge companies arose unmatched in their size and corruption.
