Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer during the 1980s and early 1990s murdered and dismembered at least 17 men. After his arrest, law enforcement found inside his apartment several body parts, which led to his confession about all the crimes he had committed. Dahmer described in great details how he met, killed, and dismembered his victims, facilitating the work of the police. Studies and assessments related and unrelated to these murders were able to create a psychological profile about Dahmer, thus linking his killing spree and his actions with mental disorders. This isn’t to say that Dahmer wasn’t responsible for his crimes- a jury of his peers determined he wasn’t legally insane at the time of the murders, but society made Dahmer. Next, this paper will use the strain theory to analyze Dahmer and his crimes.

Jeffrey Dahmer, also commonly known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, is one of America’s most notorious serial killers. In the span of nearly 15 years, between the years 1978 and 1991, it is estimated that Dahmer was responsible for the death of fifteen to seventeen young men (Radford University). As his nickname suggests Dahmer was known for drugging his victims, then raping them, then disembodying them, and if the mood fit him, cooking and eating his victims. Dahmer’s unique case resulted in him being psychologically analyzed and diagnosed by at least seven different psychologists during his trial (Palermo & Bogaerts, 2014). This paper seeks to explore the diagnostics given to Jeffery Dahmer and prove, through the use of available information, their accuracy.

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin there was a 103% spike in murders year-to-date compared to a year ago. In 2014 aggravated assaults accounted for 63.6% of the violent crimes reported, while robberies accounted for 28%, rape was at 7.2% and murders were at 1.2%. There is a percentage that no one ever thinks to think about because either that wouldn't believe it can happen or they do not think it has happened. 1997 through 1999 white collar crime made up 3.8% of incidents reported to the FBI. Majority of which were offenses are fraud and counterfeiting. Has anyone ever thought to ask themselves what is really the difference between a murder and a corrupt CEO?

Jeffrey Dahmer, famously known for killing 17 boys and men between 1978 and 1991, used new skills and tricks to get away with these hanance crimes that the police would later use to improve their skills. He was originally charged with felonies against child pornography and had a monthly routine check up at the police department (Waxman par 1). He was additionally supposed to be checked up at his house as well; however, the patrol officer didn’t so and the consequences were severe. If Dahmer had been checked at his house randomly while on patrol, the police would’ve saved many lives and prevented the serial killer from ever beginning his acts of brutality. Through the numerous murders committed by Jeffrey Dahmer, he created a new approach and understanding that law enforcers had to utilize to find criminals today.

Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested in his apartment with a complete human skeleton, eleven skulls, several packages of genitals, and preserved human body parts: hearts, muscles, and internal organs. Dahmer raped, dismembered, and cannibalized his victims some of which were young boys. Jeffrey Dahmer was diagnosed with paraphilia, necrophilia, partialisim, alcoholism, personality disorder, and sadism. Several doctors tried to rationalize Dahmer’s actions and make the claim that he only did these things because of his mental illnesses. A psychiatrist who witnessed the trial said that Dahmer proved he was of sound mind by “remembering to reach for a condom” before participating in intercourse with his deceased victims (qtd. in Ullman). The psychiatrist claimed Dahmer’s ability to “delay gratification” proved he could abide by the rules of normal society (qtd. in Ullman). Reporter and psychiatrist Joan Ullman stated that she believed in psychosis until she witnessed Dahmer’s trial. After witnessing the trial and Dahmer’s plea, Ullman made this observation: “ I kept waiting for someone to say that one of his or her best friends were cannibalistic mass murderers” (qtd. and cited in Ullman). Dahmer was arrested in July in 1991 after the Police picked up a man named Tracy Edwards who was wondering with handcuffs dangling from his wrist who stated he was drugged and he went to Dahmer’s apartment. The police officers decided to investigate the information Tracy Edwards had given them surprisingly the officers found photos dismembered bodies laying around in Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment. Even though later on Dahmer confessed to the killings during the interrogation by the police he initially plead not guilty, but then recanted and plead guilty by reason of insanity. In 1995 a police detective received a call that there was a skeleton found in the back of the casey's gas station in Dewitt Iowa. The police detectives said they found a bag of bones in a square of cement peaking above the surface. They reported that the bag smelled of acid and of cleaning chemicals. The use of the phrase “urge to have sex with the dead” shows that the people of the 1990s believed that Dahmer’s ulterior motive when committing his sins was based upon his inability to avoid giving in to lust. The families of the victims deal with the “pain they suffered” that was caused by the crimes of Dahmer and one girl even went as far as to call Dahmer “Satan”, thus showing that the people of Dahmer’s time believed his crimes worthy of Hell ("Dahmer Is Sentenced to 15 Life Terms”). Dahmer had “consensual sex” with the majority of his victims or the victims were “photographed nude” before they were drugged ("Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer”). He began secretly covering himself with homosexual pornography, and fantasies he had of homosexual lovers that he couldn’t tell others. Somewhere along the line these fantasies became twisted, he imagined his lover dead beneath him. His killings were men he found attractive, and he killed to get a sexual kick out of it. This also could’ve happened because Dahmer admits to watching lots of violent pornography.
