Military Customs and Courtesies There are many traditions that have been established over the long history of the military services. These many traditions can be broken into numerous customs and courtesies. A custom is a way of acting in a manner that has been continued constantly over a long period of time. It is almost like a law. A courtesy is a way of displaying good manners and politeness when dealing with other people. Military courtesy conveys respect both up and down the chain of command. One commonly recognized custom and courtesy is the military salute. The salute has been an exchange of greetings since the age of chivalry. During these ages the knights were mounted with steel armor that covered their body completely …show more content…
While it is debatable whether or not rank really has an effect on instilling and teaching proper customs and courtesies, there is no doubt in the important underlying message of which customs and courtesies are based. Customs and courtesies display signs of respect not only from one ranking to another (which seems to be the major focus these days) but also as a sign of brotherhood. We do these gestures and display our respect to one another in a way that should always show our loyalty to each other. From the time we enter the service we are taught to be there for each other and to trust and respect the person next to you always even though that person can be a complete stranger. In my opinion, we have, over time, lost sight of the values our customs and courtesies are designed to teach us. Customs and courtesies help make life orderly and are a way of showing respect. Customs are regular, expected actions. They have been repeated over and over again and passed from one leader to another over many generations. Courteous actions show your concern and respect for others you work for and work with also for certain object or symbols, such as the American flag. The use of customs, courtesies, and ceremonies helps keep discipline and order in any military organization. Still being used today every day from the playing of Reveille to
AR 670 - 1 Covers the various different wears of and uniforms and the standard of professional appearance for all soldier in the active and reserve army service . The professional appearance of the soldier is paramount to efficiency of a modern fighting force . Dress and appearance standards should always be upheld to show the discipline and pride of the soldier. This is the most basic soldiering task and should always be handled at the lowest level . The proper wear of the military uniform is important to keeping the esprit de corp of the military and ensuring the soldier takes pride in himself and his unit . The uniform is the most visible outward sign of military service. Both practical and aesthetic, the uniform identifies a servicemember as part of a unit and serves as an outfit in
Honor Embodies a lot to me. The Marines offer me this. The other forces scoff at such an idea. I want to be a part of something that respects and admires such traits as I have and believe in. Again the Marines offer me this. I know not all Marine respect my ideas, but at least I'll look forward to meeting and becoming a part of a group, however small or big, that has the same beliefs and ideals. Im tired of being around people that scoff and laugh at such things. I have met very people that respect the idea of Honor. The Honor that I think and believe in, has given me a strong sense of Morals and Ethics. Those that know me well will see this. Over the years it has deteriorated a bit. Going into something that respects and teaches this will help me build up to...and past the standard I have set for and used to have for myself. The Marines are a Brotherhood. Modern day Knights, I know not all are. Infact most probably arent. All the branches are infested with sex crazed drunkards, the Marines especially. Not all are like that, and I look forward to finding the select few that are not, but share my same ideals and thoughts. I plan on joining and setting a new standard.
In our day and age the word honor can mean many different things to different people. The general definition of honor is, a person who is respected, has integrity, is fair and just, hard working, kind, of good moral character, and loyal to the end of time. A person who holds this position of high esteem knows what is being asked of them, and take their service to heart. I feel that honor must be earned and that while not a fragile thing, it can be lost just as easily. We, as Americans, show honor to those who have served, or are currently serving our country. We award them for giving of their time and for sacrificing their comforts to protect all of us. In the past we, as Americans, would teach our children to show respect (honor) to their
Due to the unique nature of United States military culture, a vast majority of active duty personnel and the veteran population are accustomed to
Knights were guarded with utmost respect and honor, as Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales mentions, “There was a Knight, a most distinguished man, who from the day on which he first began to ride abroad had followed chivalry, truth, honor, generosity, and courtesy.” Knights were very distinguished and honored during the period of time covered by The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer goes on to say that Knights “often sat at table in the chair of honor, above all nations…” Chaucer continues to tell about how respected and
Barron Friedrich Wilhelm Steuben wrote the regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States in the winter of 1778. The Continental Army spent that winter at Valley Forge under the command of General George Washington. The army was a group of raw untrained farmers and to this point in the war had perfected only one military maneuver, the retreat. The true history of the Barron’s military experience is in question. For the beleaguered Continental Army the Barron and what became to be known as the U.S. Army’s blue book of drill and ceremony could not have come at a more crucial time for General Washington and his army.
Many civilians have told me that they have an admiration for the selfless service and dedication to the country that all Service Members have committed. Society would expect for me to uphold those values and project an image that is worthy of admiration and honor. Although I expect that every Soldier regardless of rank to maintain this image, I feel an officer should set the standard for this image. Officers earn their appointment directly by the President of the United States. This is a great honor and maintaining the integrity of the oath should be of utmost importance to every military officer. The military is maintained and used to ensure the safety of the country from foreign and domestic threats. Military officers are charged with providing guidance to complete military operations. Members of society would expect for a military officer to have the ability to take charge and control hostile
Veteran’s today face many challenges as they seek civilian jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2014 report more than 190,000 of the 2.8 million Gulf War II Veterans cannot find work, USMAP could help resolve this issue (Watson, 2014). Senior Enlisted Leaders need to understand the advantages USMAP in order to provide transitioning service members from active duty to civilian life. This paper will provide the background information, discussion, and recommendation for the increased use of USMAP.
The word honor means to view something with high respect or esteem. As a citizen, you should honor something or someone who represents or serves your country every day. You show Honor, or respect for your country, when you say the pledge of allegiance in school or hold the door open for a veteran when out in public. Before joining this program I did not have a really clear idea of what the military did. I did not think twice when I saw someone wearing a world war or Vietnam veterans ball cap. I knew we had a military and that they wore uniforms but that was about it. Being in the program
Respect for your subordinates, peers, seniors and officers are highly regarded. Respect earned respect in the civilian world. But usually in the military, anyone who has a higher rank than what you are wearing, respect is expected, not that respect is not expected for you to give if they are of the same rank or a lower rank but because they have earned the rank and respect is due. No matter how crooked, bent or
Honor. By dictionary definition the word honor means “high respect”1 but this definition does not even begin to give justice to the word. Honor is so much more than simply high respect; Honor is having integrity and doing what is right. It is keeping your promises. Honor is about showing respect to those who have passed away and performing selfless acts. A person’s definition of honor may consist of all these things and it also may consist of many other elements. Honors significance to a person is based on multiple different things including conformity, a person’s age and what there American dream is.
This paper is to reiterate the importance of maintaining fully staffed Coat Guard unit. The lack of personnel at the Aviation Training Center (ATC), Mobile could disrupt operational commitments. The Commandant (COMDT) mandates a minimum number of personnel required to maintain one aircraft according to the Personnel Allowance List (PAL) of which we do not meet the minimum standard for. Shortages cause maintenance evolutions to take longer to complete resulting in lower aircraft availability percentages. Over-working personnel leads to added stress to our workforce which results in safety concerns and a high likelihood mishaps. These points will be expounded upon in the information that follows.
Respect: The soldiers should treat other people with respect. Soldiers can show respect for their officers by obeying orders and showing loyalty to their teammates.
A Noncommissioned Officer's duties are numerous and must be taken seriously. An NCO's duty includes taking care of soldiers, which is your priority. Leaders must know and understand their soldiers well enough to train them as individuals and teams to operate proficiently. This will give them confidence in their ability to perform well under the difficult and demanding conditions of battle. Individual training is the principle duty and responsibility of NCOs. NCOs are responsible to fulfill not only their individual duties, but also to ensure their teams and units are successful. NCOs are accountable for your personal conduct and that of your soldiers. Noncommissioned officers have three types of duties: specified duties, directed duties
As soldiers we are taught to live the seven Army values defining the basics of what a soldier is all about. One of those being respect. Relying on the golden rule, “How we consider others reflects upon each of us, both personally and as a professional organization.” I believe this is an extremely important value to live by each and every day. As a soldier I pledged to treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same. Respect is what allows us to appreciate the best in others. Respect is trusting that all people have done their jobs and fulfilled their duty. And self-respect is an important ingredient with the Army value of respect, which results from knowing you have put forth your best
