DBQ: Impact of the Crusades The Crusades were Military campaigns that fought and destroyed many towns and innocent people. For no reason, the Crusades killed, abused and even destroyed people's land for no good reason. The Crusades fought between the Christians and Muslims. The effects of the Crusades were more negative than positive in my opinion. . The crusades left a “bitter legacy” and they also had a bad influence on the Christian community. The Crusades left a bad legacy and a cruel remembrance to many people. The Crusades did benefit us today in a few ways, but other than that they were very terrible people. Document 1 states that In the text it states, “They also left a bitter legacy of religious hatred behind them.” This is important because this shows how the Crusades were remembered. They were not remembered in a great, fun, jolly way. Not a whole lot of people liked them and I can completely understand why. Document 4 states that “...the crusaders and Venetians stormed Constantinople, sacked the city, destroying its magnificent library, and grabbed thousands of relics that were later sold in Europe. From destruction, the Byzantine Empire as a political unit never recovered.”_In a different part of document 4, it also says, “....the Fourth Crusade was reunion of Greek and Latin churches, made the split between the Greek and Latin.”This is interesting because …show more content…
The Crusades even caused an Empire to never fully recover! In the other piece of evidence it speaks of the Crusades even causing two religions to split up! As you can see, the Crusades did some very bad things to people and were not nice
The Crusades were an unpleasant event that happened for many reasons. It was established in 1096 and thankfully ended in 1291. The cause for why the Crusades had a more negative result is because most people died from participating or majorly hurt. This is because Document 6 states “The city was savagely taken with many lives lost” meaning that people had died. So, the continued fighting that took place because of the Crusades had a huge negative impact on the many people that lost their lives. In addition, Document 1 states “In Europe, crusaders sometimes turned their fury against Jews, massacring entire communities.” Which meant that full families including children were slaughtered, killed and destroyed because the crusaders were mad at
The Crusades of the High Middle Ages (a.d. 1050-1300) was a period of conquest or rather, reconquest, of Christian lands taken from Muslims in the early Middle Ages. It is an era romanticized by fervent Christians as the time when Christianity secured its honorable status as the true religion of the world. The affect of the Crusades is still with us today. It sailed from Spain and Portugal to the Americas in the fifthteenth century aboard sailing ships carrying conquistadors who sought new territory and rich resources. They used the shield and sword of Christianity to justify a swift conquest of mass territory and the subjugation of the indigenous peoples; a mentality learned, indeed,
The impact of the crusades were more negative because In document 1 states that they left a religious hatred behind them because they were very hard on them. Also because they had bad reasons and fought too much and the crusades still wanted to fight and attack each other. Many lives were lost because they fought for a while and they were destroying a lot of Muslims. In document 5 it states that Islam and Christians struggled and Muslims, christian, and
Besides having the Crusades being negative based on dying and losing their main objective, another example as to why the Crusades ended so negatively, is that many lands were demolished and robbed. In addition, in document 4 it indicates “ … the crusaders and the Venetians stormed Constantinople,, sacked the city, destroying its magnificent library, and grabbed thousands of relics that were later sold in Europe. From destruction, the Byzantine Empire as a political unit never recovered.” This is pertinent because it is clearly stated that they had destroyed buildings and when things are destroyed it’s rarely a good thing. Another thing that shows negativity is that after the Byzantine Empire was sacked, it never repaired. When something is damaged, it’s really bad for the people who have a relation to it. So when they had destroyed the Byzantine Empire, it must’ve hurt many people to see their city ruined. Furthermore in document B is states “Jerusalem was taken from the north on the morning of July 15, 1099. The population was put to the sword by the Franks, who pillaged the area for a week.
There were both positive and negative effects of The Crusades, although the positives did outweigh the negatives. The two major negative effects were anti-Semitism and the orchestrated attacks by Venice. Many Crusaders in Europe were so religiously fuming, that they turned their anger towards the Jews. They would at times massacre a whole community as a result of their religious rage. During the fourth crusade, crusaders began fighting Christians instead of Muslims. After helping Venetian merchants defeat their Byzantine trade rivals in 1204, the crusaders captured and looted Constantinople. They actually ransacked the capital of the Byzantine Empire, the empire in which they began to fight for, not against. There also were many positive effects of The Crusades, one being the increase of trade. Even before the Crusades, merchants began to enjoy some of the luxury goods that were brought from the Byzantine Empire. The crusaders that
One reason why the Crusades were more negative than positive was because they worsen their own relationship with the Jews and Muslims, or religious hatred, even tho they were bad anyways. Document 5 states that ”First, the long struggle between Islam and Christendom and the example of persecution set by Christian kings and prelates (bishops) left an inheritance of deep bitterness; relations between Muslims and their Christian and Jewish subjects worsened.” (description of some of the effects of the Crusades). This is (important/interesting/relevant) because even if the Christian and Muslims relationship was bad already the Crusades made it worse by the bitterness left and even the Jews now are in it because when the Crusades lost, they took their fury against the Jews and would slaughter and destroy their cities even though the lost against the Muslims. Document 10 states that “...which one of the Franks
The Crusades were one of the most prominent events in Western European history; they were not discrete and unimportant pilgrimages, but a continuous stream of marching Western armies (Crusaders) into the Muslim world, terminating in the creation and eventually the fall of the Islamic Kingdoms. The Crusades were a Holy War of Roman Christianity against Islam, but was it really a “holy war” or was it Western Europe fighting for more land and power? Through Pope Urban II and the Roman Catholic Church’s actions, their proposed motivations seem unclear, and even unchristian. Prior to the Crusades, Urban encouraged that Western Europe fight for their religion but throughout the crusades the real motivations shone though; the Crusaders were power
The Crusades were a series of nine wars that began when Christians accumulated the first Crusaders to go and fight to take Jerusalem from the Muslims. But though the Crusades failed in their quest to conquer Jerusalem, there were positive and negative effects. However, it is evident in many ways the results were very damaging; in the way they impacted future relationships of Christians, Muslims, and Jews; and in how terrible the 4th Crusade ended up being.
The Crusades were more negative rather beneficial because of the religious hatred that they left behind and that they turned onto jews. Document one states,”...massacring entire communities,” meaning many people died because of the bitter legacy of the hatred of the religious. This is important because religious hatred is a legacy that was left by the crusades when they also failed in their chief
The Crusades were a bloody war that the church deemed holy and necessary for salvation of the knights soul. The Crusades are a highly controversial and very dark stain on the Catholic church and Hierarchies past. The war was brought to the church from there Roman allies who they had tense dealings with. The where seeking aid in the fight against the muslim turks. The church decreed there act holy and justified. The people who were under the churches thumb had no objections to the slaughter that their beloved God had suposably justified.
The crusades were more negative than positive because there were many innocent people were killed because of their religion. In document 1 it states In Europe, crusaders sometimes turned their fury against jews, massacring entire communities. They would do this just because they were
The Crusades were a bad place in that time because of all the blood and gore that developed upon the religions. This was the worst event to occur in religion history. These humans that were fighting for their religion never seemed to live a long, healthy life. Citizens fighted for their religion and brought random tools as weapons, like a farmer or a merchant. The Crusades killed a lot of innocent people and did not care, they even killed people surrendering. They stole and did a lot of bad things just because someone wants to bow down and pray doesn't have to start a war. This is the crusaders being a negative effect in general.Document 1 states that they take out their hatred on innocent people of their different religion but they won't hurt or kill the people of their religion. Ex. Christianity will kill Jews and Muslims, but not Christians. This is important because with this info you can obviously tell that they did not care about anyone or anything by them slaughtering, destroying, and terrorizing the cities of Constantinople and many others. Document 4 states that
The Crusades was a battle between two religions, Christians and Muslims, during the eleventh century and went inside of the thirteenth century. A complex question that is trying to be determined is was the impact the crusades more positive or more negative. Through all of the problems the crusades caused such as destroying churches along with splitting them apart from one another and causing a hatred relationship between both religions the crusades were truly a unfavorable period of time. A cause for the Crusades being a negative time was because during the Crusades the churches that the religions went to and followed were being demolished as well as splitting them apart from one another.
The Crusades were Christian military expeditions undertaken between the 11th and the 14th century to recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims. “The word crusade, which is derived from the Latin crux ("cross"), is a reference to the biblical restriction that Christians carry their cross.”1 Crusaders wore a red cloth, cross sewn on their tunics to indicate that they had assumed the cross and were soldiers of Christ. What were the real causes of the crusades and how did all of it finally came to an end? To answer these questions this paper will examine the following areas: The beginning of the crusades, how did it came to an end and what were the factors that encouraged so many people to participate in it.
The Crusades was two centuries of intermittent warfare throughout the Middle Ages where the Christians of Europe tried to take back control of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the Muslims between 1095 and 1291, the stated motive was to recover the Holy Land from Muslim forces, when it came to a final point it would be seen that the Crusades encouraged expansion of trade and learning in Europe’s development. On November 1095, Pope Urban II calls out the First Crusade, to their success the First Crusade was a big victory. The beginning of the Crusades was a grand call for Pope Urban II, afterwards the rest of the Crusades were a significant failure.
