Han China (206 B.C.E. – 220 C.E.), and Imperial Rome (31 B.C.E. – 476 C.E.), were powerful and influential civilizations whose fall had an everlasting impact on society. The inability to protect borders and corrupt officials led to the fall of Han China and Imperial Rome. Unlike the Han, Christianity tore Rome apart while Confucianism united China. The corruption of officials led to the dismay of both Han China and Imperial Rome. In Han China, Wang Mang hoarded grain and allowed his people to starve to death during poor harvest (EV-H). He also allowed corruption, while serving in office, by doing nothing to stop officials who were abusing his attempt to equalize prices of goods (EV-H). In Han China, the social beliefs of Confucianism brought China closer by teaching morals and ethical principles (EV-H). Confucianism brought upon social order and respect to China (EV-H). Unlike the Han, Christianity tore Imperial Rome apart. Christianity conflicted with Rome’s beliefs because Christians believe in spiritual peace. These beliefs conflicted with Rome’s military virtues, triggering conflicting opinions and divisions (EV-R). Ultimately, Christianity weakened the Roman Empire as opposed to Confucianism uniting Han China. In context, like the Han and the Roman, the Gupta Empire fell for similar reasons. The Gupta fell for reasons such as from the invasions of the White Hun, which drained the Guptas treasuries, similar to Han China who were invaded by the Xiongnu and Imperial Rome by the Visigoths. Civil unrest is also a recurring factor in the fall of all three mentioned civilizations. In conclusion, Han China and Imperial Rome both shared aspects that led to their fall. Han China’s Confucianism brought China closer together, while Rome’s Christianity tore Rome apart.
