There is a lot of rising controversy surrounding minors and high-impact sports like football. From Elementary age kids playing little league to high school football, an increasing number of studies are surfacing that are showing many negative effects surrounding head trauma. Some experts are even calling for the sport to be banned from middle and high schools. The concerns surrounding head trauma have existed in the NFL for numerous year, and these concerns brought foreword extensive new research in detection, effects, and prevention. Even today the NFL plans to spend 100 million dollars on new prevention and treatment options for concussions. The shock absorption technology used in football helmets has made advanced majorly in the last 10 years, yet concussion rates are increasing. With the risk of head trauma having long term consequences, especially in minors with developing brains, the ideas of terminating the sport take root. Although serious, these risks are far outweighed by the benefits of football that a substitute sport can not provide: The answer to how to make football safer for minors is much simpler and cheaper than advancing technology. While working hard is an important factor in being successful in every sport, it is especially prudent in football. The hype behind the sport causes athletes and communities to love the sport. No other sport has a week like homecoming, football players are put on a pedestal and academics are essentially put on hold due to the lack of focus. The entire week focuses on Friday night’s game. This hype draws the biggest and best athletes to want to be a part of the fun—to be on that pedestal. This in turn makes the competition within the sport better. Being on the team isn’t enough though, as my head coach used to say, “Homecoming is fun, but it’s worth nothing if you lose Friday night.” Knowing the entire week is dedicated to one game causes the team to work harder than the athletes in other sports. The standard expected by the coaches carries over to the classroom and into the athlete’s lives outside of high school. Kevin Kniffin, a behavioral scientist as Cornell University, studies and teaches about the leadership skills and character traits of athletes from

Concussions in the NFL have become a very serious issue. A concussion is a complex process that effects the brain, usually from a trauma, it can be caused by either a direct blow to the head or an indirect blow to the body. Symptoms usually reflect a functional disturbance to the brain and may include headaches and nausea, difficulty with memory and concentration.
Concussions are brain injuries that can be caused by either a blow to the head or the head and body shaking. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention had a significant amount of research on how to prevent concussions. They disclose that tackling is responsible for nearly two-thirds of concussions in High School football whereas teaching better tackling techniques to avoid head hits would be one way to reduce the number of concussions (Bain Injury Safety Tips and Prevention). It also states that about half of the plays that an individual receives a concussion is due to a running play which generates the importance on keeping close attention to the running plays (Bain Injury Safety Tips and Prevention). Plays in the middle where a linebacker and a running back meet at full speed can prove to be very dangerous. Cheap hits can also be a reason why some players receive concussions, which is why adding new rules those cheap blows to he head, or blindsides can be called a personal foul to discourage players from them (Bain Injury Safety Tips and Prevention). Obviously not every concussion occurs during games, they can also occur during football practices. Cutting down on full contact practices and also tackling drills can put players at less risk of concussions. Eliminating dangerous drills would eliminate the number of concussions during practice.
Head injuries in football can lead to finished careers because of injuries such as; brain damage, concussions, and other major head traumas. Some retired players want to sue the NFL because they claim that coaches were aware of concussions that turned into dementia.Certain types of brain damage can cause mood swings, and some times permanent mental damage. Almost all football players end up with some type of brain damage.
The reason why the author wrote this documentary is that he wanted to reveal the truth about football players concussions. The scientist was figuring out why player life spans were not very long. They bought it to the league which they was denying it. Its basically over the league denying the subject and trying to cover up possible ties with the players concussions and their suffering on the football field and all the brain injuries. The league cover up things and are still running over the businesses. It is very important that somebody look into the concussions and the players health. It is important that the players get all the medical attention they need so they can have a long career. It will prevent most of the players concussions and
During the majority of a regular season of NFL, there is an average of 92 head injuries caused by helmet to helmet contact. It has also been estimated that high school football players have suffered around 11.2 concussions for every 10,000 practices and games. Among college players, the number was around 6.3. Over the years, researchers have been trying to improve the capability of a football helmet to withstand a stronger impact that will decrease the risk of the player getting a concussion. If we took the structure of a woodpecker's beak and applied it to a football helmet, it could possibly be a safer alternative and decrease the risk of concussions.
In the world of football there are a lot of things that can have a long term effect on your body. But in the last few years the major concentration of all the injuries in the game of football has been concussions. As it was found that concussions have a lot more of a long term effect than we originally thought. So with that being the problem from medical professional to the NFL all the way down to little league teams have been making adjustments to the game that we all know and love. Trying to make it a safer sport for people to play with the same excitement, but without the long term effects.
No matter what high school and NFL does to prevent the concussions the can still happen. As a result, player can still get a concussion with all the rules and penalty’s the they have in the sport. If it is so simple to have the rule to stop the concussions, why are they still getting concussions while playing or practicing? Why can’t people not hit people hard? These tactics have proven useless because players are still getting concussions when they play. In addition, these same players will not be able to play for weeks and can come back and get another concussion. These factors need to be considered is that they need to add more padding to the players helmets. In other words, they need to add padding to high school and the NFL’s helmets to ensure the safety of the player.
Youth athletes experiencing concussions is a very serious matter. When an adolescent first experiences a concussion, they may seem dazed and confused. The adolescent may show signs of dizziness and have trouble recalling basic information. If after a blow to the head an athlete displays these signs, they should stop playing immediately and be taken out of the competition (Khabie 1). But just how prevalent in youth football are concussions? Some claim that most players experience head trauma that will leave a lasting negative effect on the athlete’s brain. Others believe that concussions in youth football are very rare and most of the time have no long term effects on the athlete. Many would say that even if there is risk of injury, football provides many positive opportunities that kids should not pass up on due to fear. The sport of American Football provides challenges, comradery, essential skills, and fun that outweighs potential injury risk for youth who participate in the sport and should be offered to those who choose to play the sport at a young age.
Over the past ten years, awareness over the issue of concussions across all sports has been increased significantly worldwide. Specifically, in the sport of football, awareness has been extremely heightened due to the increased number of concussions throughout the game, along with the revelation of post traumatic diseases due to repeated head trauma. With these occurrences, throughout society the debate if football is safe to play in its current state ensues. Although there have been rule changes in the rules of football about how the game should be played, these changes have not entirely made the game safer for the players. Certainly, with the minor advances in safety technology for the players to use, the rate and severity of concussions were expected to decrease over time; however, this trend did not take place. Thus, football has become too risky, and dangerous to participate in due to the increased rate of concussions within the sport, especially as the game continues to become faster and harder with safety technology not advancing at the same rate.
Football is the most popular sport in the U.S. About 1.4 million people watch the NFL season and about 111.9 million people watch the NFL Super Bowl. Although it is the most popular sport is it the most dangerous? There are many people getting concussions, injuries to the Meniscus, Groin Pull, Hamstring pull, etc. It is rare for pro football players to obtain injuries, but it is more common for high school and college football players to get injuries, sometimes serious. The NFL does notice that football is a dangerous sport and assign many protections like pads and helmets, but it doesn’t stop kids from getting serious injuries.
To entice fans, the NFL implements multiple fantasy football leagues, the NFL Red Zone and video games such as Madden. This brings a substantial amount of support to the NFL because they allow the fans to feel like they are a real part of the game and not just part of the audience. Due to this, the NFL season is made to be one of the most anticipated times of the year for players, coaches, and especially fans. Sundays are dedicated to football in most American households. So, it is no surprise that if one player takes a hard hit it is often over looked. In the 2015 football season the total number of reported concussions was 271. This is almost a 32% increase from the previous year with only 206 reported concussions (Seifert). These numbers do not account for all the concussions that go unreported and most concussions from this sport go unreported. Any trauma to the brain can be harmful, but repeated concussions, like those that occur in the NFL, and concussions without treatment make the symptoms worse. Most NFL players are suffering but not a lot is being done about it.
In the past five years, there has been over 1,215 concussions in the NFL.(NFL concussions fast facts, 2017) When will the NFL finally take notice of this problem, when will they take action? A big circulating problem the NFL has faced, would be regarding their Concussion Protocol, or the action the NFL takes to punish the teams that fail to follow it. The Concussion Protocol is not only important to league, but to its players. As concussions are becoming more frequent in football(especially the NFL) there is action needed regarding player safety, safety measures, and the treatment of concussed players. With this in mind, the NFL needs to change its rules and protocols covering player safety, to help prevent and cope with head injuries.
According to the 2015 NFL Health and Safety Report, concussions occurring in regular-season games have dropped 35 percent since 2012 (Reyes 2015). Concussions caused by helmet-to-helmet hits decreased 43 percent and hits to defenseless players are down 68 percent since 2013 (Reyes 2015). When injuries do occur, there are more medical professionals on site than ever to assist the athlete — 27 healthcare providers are present at NFL games and each team has two orthopedic surgeons, two primary care physicians, four athletic trainers, one chiropractor and one neurologist or neurosurgeon unaffiliated with the team (Geier 2016). In addition, the independent athletic trainer in the booth, a dentist, an ophthalmologist, an anesthesiologist, a radiology tech to take x-rays and two paramedics can assist injured players as needed (Geier 2016). The NFL has also sought to find better technology. Working with GE and Under Armour, the league held a “Head Health Challenge,” awarding financial incentives to companies with innovative ideas to protect athletes from head injuries; these ideas included an under-layer beneath synthetic turf to cushion the blows when players hit the ground, a helmet with many layers to better absorb impacts and a tether connecting the head to the torso to try to prevent the head from snapping back suddenly after a football tackle (Geier 2016). Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that they want to continue improving the game and have a new plan to increase the
Football is a sport that I wouldn't allow my son to play. Football is a hard and dangerous sport to allow your son to play. This sport promotes too much violence and can lead to concussions. Players can be hurt because there are tough players out in the field. Football players are tough and rough out there on the field. They can be rough and tough to go up against. The weakest players out their get hurt. “I had concussions as a kid playing football and basketball, and know what it” feels like and to have someone say 'Just rub some dirt on it, and get back in their.” - Billy Corgan.
