Compare And Contrast Jamestown And Plymouth

The Virginia and New England colonists struggled to adapt to the radically different conditions of their new environments. However, that is where the similarities between the two seem to end. Both colonies boasted different economies, political systems, societies and cultures, which place them at opposite ends of the colonial spectrum.

Between the years of 1606 and 1620 two colonies were founded along the eastern cost of North America. These two colonies were known as the Jamestown colony (1606), and the Plymouth colony (1620). They were similar in that they both struggled to survive in the early years of settlement due to famine, and disease. They were different in a variety of ways with some relating to environmental factors, Indian relations, reasons for coming to the new world, and their experiences upon arrival in the new world.

The Jamestown and Plymouth settlements were both settled in the early 1600's. Plymouth and Jamestown were located along the shoreline in Massachusetts and Virginia, respectively. Although both had different forms of government, they both had strong leadership. Jamestown was controlled by the London Company, who wanted to profit from the venture, while the Puritans who settled at Plymouth were self-governed with an early form of democracy and settled in the New World to gain religious freedom. John Smith took charge in efforts to organize Jamestown, and at Plymouth William Bradford helped things run smoothly.

After three failed expeditions between 1578 and 1587 by Raleigh, John Smith finally established Jamestown as the first New World settlement in 1607. Jamestown itself almost failed, but with the help of natives, tobacco farming, and the arrival of African servants, it flourished. Puritans arrived on the Mayflower in 1620, and founded Plymouth. The Massachusetts Bay Colony formed in 1630, drawing many thousands of immigrants. Plymouth and the Bay Colony would ultimately merge into the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1691. Jamestown and Plymouth were both pretty big colonies and they were both quite successful. But they were different in many ways, but similar in some ways. I found it really interesting how each colony was different like they both wanted something similar which was to make money and also to start a new life because in reality, many people called them the rejects of Europe which essentially is what happened and they did come here for a fresh start. But either way these two colonies had their good and bad times, but which colony would you choose to be a part of? I should probably talk about them before a decision is made.

Leaders of Plymouth and Jamestown are both compare because they both came from England, Native Americans aided the newly incorporated groups by supplying them for food, and both empires resulted in the starvation and death. However, in Jamestown, John Smith set a goal to make money and get rich, developed the idea of everyone for themselves, men were the dominant gender, and Smith abandoned the colony and never decided to return. As for Plymouth, William Bradford 's’ goal was to have religious freedom, the group helped one another, families were unity of the empire, and Bradford was more caring and considerate of his people and remained this way for the rest of his life.

The English had two main colonies in the new world, Jamestown and Plymouth. The first colony was Jamestown, established in Virginia in 1607. Jamestown was settled by Captain John Smith, and was named after King James I. Tobacco was the main export of Jamestown, and became the basis of the Jamestown economy, sending more than 50,000 lbs of the plan back to Europe by 1618 (textbook 46). Jamestown had a very rocky start, many colonists dying in the first few years of the settlement, and the settlers had many problems with natives. Shortly after the arrival of English colonists the Natives attacked them, and were finally forced back by a canon from the English. Jamestown presented more prospects to colonists than Massachusetts Bay Colony by allowing more than one religion, workers rights, and freedom of speech. Jamestown settlers had a bond from England guarantees the rights of settlers, as they would have had it in England. The Puritans formed the Massachusetts Bay Colony and they established a charter also. Both colonies had their have and have not in them. Massachusetts Bay Colony encourage the church greatly and Jamestown boost working over religion. The starting of a democracy, equality was from Jamestown.

The first English colony was Roanoke. Roanoke was founded in 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh. The purpose of this colony was to provide the English a toe hold into the New World. Roanoke Colony was neither profit seeking or religiously motivated, but by the opportunity to establish a settlement in the New World.

Long before the Founding Fathers, European countries built settlements in the wilderness of the New World. During the 1600’s, English settlers founded Plymouth and Jamestown along the Eastern Coast of North America. Puritans established Plymouth to escape the Catholic Church of England. The Virginia Company established Jamestown in search of fortune. Both settlements managed unavoidable contact with the natives. Although both Plymouth and Jamestown’s interactions with Native Americans included early encounters, diplomatic intermediaries, and peace treaties, Jamestown’s approach differed from by displaying less aggression.

The colonists set up a colony at Jamestown to defend themselves against the Indians, and eventually Powhatan’s people came forward to open the trade of corn with the colonists. This corn eventually kept the colonist alive until another ship of more people and supplies came in.     Jamestown and Massachusetts Bay were the first English colonies formed in North America in the early 1600’s. While the Jamestown settlers searched for gold, the Massachusetts Bay colonist came to escape persecution in England and obtain religious freedoms. Both Plymouth and Jamestown came from England. All people from England created these towns in what they called the “new world”.
