Hinduism is the oldest religion on the planet that has been well established and still has a large following. To put it into perspective if religons were under 100 years old Hinduism would be 80 and Judaism and Christianity would still be in their 20s or 30s. Buddhism is also a long-standing religion and branches off of Hinduism which is why we can easily see some connections and conflict of ideas between both. Since both religons have been around for a thousands of years it is impossible to know everything and every interpretation of both religons. Hinduism and Buddhism were both founded and popular in northern India by 600 CE. Although Hinduism and the Hindu caste system maintained a strong influence in South Asia throughout 600-1750 CE, the Hindu majority eventually gave way as Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and syncretic faiths gradually moved in and across the Indian Ocean basin by 1750 CE. Even then, Hinduism did spread from northern India through southern India to Southeast Asia. The caste system was maintained from 600-1750 CE, given the fact that Hinduism promoted such rigid class distinctions as morally right, though the caste system developed sub-castes during this period. Buddhism actually declined with Hinduism and Islam gaining more ground in its native India only to slowly gain influence in SE Asia. This spread was caused by Buddhist merchants, who brought their religion to their trade partners. Founded in 622, Islam had large and rapid growth due to early military conquests, spread of religion through missionary work, and trade, which exposed non-Muslim merchants to the religion. Other faiths such as Christianity, Sikhism, and Akbar’s “Divine Faith” had modest success. By 1750, the Indian Ocean contained many different religions, and each faith influenced various empires, social classes, and port cities to differing degrees.
In comparing Buddhism and Hinduism there are many factors to consider. There are many similarities between these two religions. While looking at both, although Buddhism was formed as a response to Hinduism, you see that both don’t have a primary god they worship. Adding on to this each religion also has religious leaders. The differences are also very obvious as well such as Buddhism having a very prominent founder while Hinduism doesn’t have a primary founder. Although both religions believed in reincarnation, Buddhism believed that your goal is to reach a state of enlightenment whereas Hindus used a caste system where the person can only be moved up a caste after dying.
Religion can be found all over the world. Each religion unique as the country they arise from, it just so happens that both Buddhism and Hinduism come from the same region, India. Buddhism and Hinduism share similarities, but also display differences that set them apart from one another.

A major connection between Buddhism/Hinduism and religions all over the world is the practices. Mostly all religions have holidays, beliefs, and some form of prayer or worship. If Buddhism/Hinduism have practices, holidays, and prayers just like every other religion they should be allowed to be considered as religions as well. Buddhism shares much in common with Hinduism similar to Christianity and Judaism sharing many similarities. Although the world may group Buddhism and Hinduism together because of the similarities, they are separate religions. Another commonality to Hinduism and other major practices considered religions is the branching of the religion. As amongst most people in the world not everyone will agree upon one practice and similar to other religions Hinduism has many branches. Different people rejecting the religious beliefs of the religion and having their own beliefs begin their own branches of the religion and gain followers. This practice is common amongst religions but can be seen in Hinduism through people like Ram Roy or Dayananda Sarasvati. This occurred in Christianity with Martin Luther beginning his own branch of the religion. The biggest branch off of Hinduism is Buddhism. Buddhism began when “tension between the religion of the brahmins (Hinduism) and another traditional system of beliefs and practices that we might call Ganges Spirituality” (Oxtoby & Segal 373) caused a separation of the religion. Although it may be confusing having similarities amongst the two groups, both should be considered separate religions. The similarities amongst what the world defines as “major religions” and Hinduism/Buddhism are enough to qualify Hinduism and Buddhism as

In fact, some of the terminologies from both religions have the same definition, such as the word nirvana, which means the final goal in life in both Hinduism and Buddhism. However, Hinduism and Buddhism do have their differences in the way the people treat their society. For instance, Hinduism has a caste system in which different people are treated differently from their compeers. On the other hand, Buddhism rejected the caste system because its leader, Buddha, believed the birth of a person does not determine his or her social status. On the whole, Hinduism and Buddhism have made huge impacts on people from the past and up to the present.
