In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the Russian revolution is compared to farm animals who experience the same tyrant that the citizens of Russia did. Pigs, who represent politicians, take control of a farm that has just been overthrown their farmer. Under the pigs rule, the Farm failed to prosper. The animals failed to keep a good reputation with the neighboring farmers. Animal Farm has a strong comparison to Soviet Russia under the rule of Stalin. Animal Farm characters experience the same conditions as citizens of Soviet Russia. Similarities between Animal Farm and Soviet Russia have many similarities including a purge, their views on government, and their secret police.

W.H.C. Smith, in his book The Last Czar, describes how Nicholas II disliked public life and public duties (31). He also states, “ It was in his private life, in the role of husband and father, that Nicholas excelled. He loved his wife and his children and indeed made the small world of his own family his entire world (Smith 31). Jones also left the farm unattended which lead to hardships for the animals, just as Czar Nicholas II left Russia unattended also.

It can be argued that the novel Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is the most well-known comparison of the Russian Revolution. In Animal Farm, the animals of Manor Farm, inspired by a dream of the pig Old Major, overthrow their master Mr. Jones. Their goal was to be free from the influence of man and to all be equal. However, over time, the hunger for power, jealousy, and conflict get in the way and the farm goes back to the way it was; just this time, pig Napoleon is the ruler.

The fable starts off with Old Major giving a speech about his plans of revolution and persuading the animals that humans were no good. Similarly, Karl Marx was the original mastermind of the revolution, the one who proposed all the ideas before Lenin and Stalin took over the uprising; similarly to Old Major. After Old Major died, he left the pigs to lead to be in charge of the animals and the farm's revolution trusting them that they would follow his plans. The pigs "...elaborated old Major's teachings into a complete system of thought, to which they gave the name of Animalism" (Orwell 13). Lenin and Stalin, the leaders of the Bolsheviks, had also promised to use Marx's plans and tactics. While Snowball and Napoleon, the allegories of Lenin and Stalin, lead the political party, Squealer promotes it. Just like the Pravda Newspaper, this pig would talk about his while persuading the animals that all they do is aimed for the well-being and benefit for their followers. The pigs later begin to abuse their power, such as when they begin to change the original amendments of Marx and Marxism for their own benefit only, and they start behaving like humans to the point where it was "... already it was impossible to say which was which" (Orwell 97). After a while, the leaders of the Bolsheviks began to abuse their power and started a dictatorship as well. Old Major, the pig that introduces the idea of rebellion and Animalism to the animals represents Karl Marx. As well, Old Major and Marx’s ideas for animalism and communism got altered and changed by others shortly after their deaths. Just as Marx, Old Major is also believed to share similarities with Vladimir Lenin. Old Major is responsible for converting Manor Farm into Animal Farm, as Lenin was responsible for changing Russia into the U.S.S.R. Vladimir Lenin also founded the Bolshevik Party. The Bolsheviks were able to gain power as a result of taking advantage of the social and political situations going on in the country at the time. This resembles to how the animals were able to gain power by banding together to overthrow farmer Jones.

Both Old Major and Lenin think that the owners or the higher class are the enemies, and wanted more equality for the working class. “The enemies of the working people, the landowners” (Linen). It was the same case in Animal Farm the only difference being the working class were animals and the upper class is Mr. Jones. “All the habits of man or evil” (Orwell) The way society was currently working, the working class was making everything and the higher class was reaping all the rewards. The ideas of Old Major and Lenin was the same, level the playing field so everyone is equal. There are a few differences between the two stories.
