Standards and Procedures
Dress Code: Company X requires business casual dress Monday through Thursday each week. Appropriate dress Monday through Friday includes slacks, khakis, corduroys, skirts or dresses no more than 3” above the knee, capris, polo collar knit or golf shirts, short-sleeve blouses or shirts, oxford shirts, jackets or sweaters, turtlenecks, company logo wear, sport coats, blazers, dress shoes, moccasins, casual heels, open-back shoes. Inappropriate items Monday through Friday include leggings, sweatpants, exercise wear, shorts, jeans, skirts or dresses more than 3” above the knee, low cut blouses showing cleavage, shirts with writing (other than company logo), beachwear, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sleeveless blouses or shirts, crop tops, clothing showing midriffs, spaghetti straps. * Friday is considered casual day, on which jeans and tennis shoes will be allowed. All other dress code rules remain in effect on Friday’s.
Violations of the dress code range from inappropriate clothing items to offensive perfumes and body odor. If an employee arrives to work dressed inappropriately, they will be sent home by management to change into proper attire and return to work. The employee will be off the clock until such time he or she has returned to work dressed appropriately. If an employee’s poor hygiene or use of too much perfume or cologne is an issue, management will discuss the issue with the employee in private,
Dress codes exist for a reason. Sometimes it is for safety reasons but sometimes it’s just about what the employers or clients are willing to accept. If a certain look or appearance might make a client uncomfortable then the company will decide that such an appearance is inappropriate or might pose an unnecessary risk for that company.
I believe a strict dress code is a definitely a defense for the company, however, in my opinion, I did not think they executed there reasoning behind this definition the correct way.
Any employee who feels that he or she has been subjected to sexual harassment should immediately contact the Human Resources Department for investigation and corrective action. Protection from retaliation will be provided and confidentiality will be provided as much as reasonably possible. Any employee who witnesses someone engaging in what could be deemed as sexually harassing conduct is obligated to notify the Human Resources Department even if the victim says that they can handle it or that they can take care of it themselves. Sexual harassment is an illegal act and must be reported and investigated just like any other illegal activity.

In today’s society looking good is important, especially in the working environment. Every occupation has some sort of dress code for employees to follow. Dress codes can range from wearing suits to gym shorts depending on one’s occupation. Employers decide if the candidate is qualified for the job based on appearance, and then what you wear for the job based on the company’s dress code. The question is can one’s employer dictate what is appropriate dress outside of the job? Employers should only have a say of what one wears while representing the company.
Relevant legislations that have an impact on this issue are the labour code of Canada. In the code it states that ‘the employer is responsible for making decisions about dress codes, uniforms, and other clothing requirements’ (Government of Ontario, Ministry of Labour). Although an employer is responsible for making the decisions about dress codes, it can not violate a collective agreement within the workplace, Ontario Human Rights Code, or the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Government of Ontario, Ministry of Labour). This means that what dress code the employer sets it must follow the codes in the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Occupational Health and safety Act states. Dress codes can be thought of as an achievement to the employees. They will feel pride for their job and will think of a uniform as a perk. Workers will also feel equal for several reasons.
