Communication in the Workplace

In today's world, there are so many ways to communicate! I would like you to evaluate the communication within your company. Are meetings run effectively? Does your manager do a good job of communicating ideas, performance, expectations? What could be improved upon?

Listening: During a client consultation I made sure to listen to my client’s needs and use active listening to give the client a sense of confidence and assure them that they would be taken care of, I also made sure to clarify any doubts with the client. For example, when the client would ask to have a haircut or trimming of only one inch, I would always ask them to describe what one inch meant to them. My clientele was constant. My customers kept returning back to me and bringing in new customers with them, one of the best complements I got was “You never leave my hair too short you always cut it exactly how I want it” and many others.

Communication is essential in everyday life. The more efficient and effective we communicate the better quality of life we can achieve not only for ourselves but for those around us. We need communication for numerous reasons: -

Communication skills are very important no matter where or who you are. Communication within a workplace can determine whether a business or individual is successful or not. Understanding effective communication in a medical setting helps hospitals and doctor offices develop a work environment that is able to communicate effectively with coworker, patients and doctors in order to take of the patients needs. Listening, clarity and Patience are three main keys to effective communication within a workplace. In this paper, the author will describe an experience within the medical field work place where communication was effective.

Communication is the conveyance and flow of ideas from one person to another. The exchange of information takes place through letters, words, symbols and nonverbal behaviors. It involves the transmission of ideas from the sender to the receiver. Communication is effective only if the receiver fully understands the transmitted information. Many problems and failures occur in organizations due to poor communication. Objective and goals fail due to misunderstandings in the organization. Effective communication provides a chain of understanding to all participants in the organizational framework. It promotes the flow of information both vertically and horizontally.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical skill in each area of our life, beginning with the personal life and ending on the work environment. It can improve an individual's social effectiveness, and allow for the better understanding of how our emotions work. “Emotional intelligence involves the ability to recognize and control one's own emotions and the emotions of others and refers to a variety of competencies and skills such as empathy and self-control that affect personal and professional outcomes” (Butler, Kwantes, and Boglarsky, 2014).

Communication is very important to have in our everyday life. Without communication, there would be no relationships among people. When having a meeting of any sort, communication is the most effective way to get your thoughts and ideas across to people. I want to provide an observation of a meeting that I attended, where communication within the group was evaluated.

Communication is any behaviour, be it verbal, non-verbal or graphic which can be interpreted by another individual or group (Dwyer 2013). Interpersonal communication involves interactions within small groups or between two individuals in a one-on-one situation, making it an essential part of everyday life, including in the workplace, learning environments and personal settings. Understanding gender differences, the importance of active listening and negotiation strategies as well as being aware of potential barriers are all key aspects of being able to communicate effectively. These are a number of examples of communication processes that I have encountered throughout life, both professionally and personally that I am now able to reflect upon and learn from.

Communication skills are important for those big or small. There was once a mouse called Jack. He went to work every day, collecting cheese and putting it in a shack. One day at work he saw that the shack could not hold anymore cheese. Jack decided not to communicate his concerns with his co-workers. Eventually, a hole was created in the shack and his workplace lost all their cheese to the starving cats. If Jack had only communicated his concerns, then maybe he and his co-workers could have prevented the issue. This is why it is important that professionals in corporate businesses, health organizations, and other industries have good communication skills. According to Alison Doyle, “the ability to communicate effectively with superiors, colleagues, and staff is essential, no matter what industry you work in”. Another article by Mike Kermode stated “having good communication skills in the workplace is all about being able to convey information to people clearly and simply, in a way that means things are understood and get done”. Listening, forming personal relationships, reasoning and explaining, and speaking honestly and directly are communication skills that professionals deem as important to ensure their job functions smoothly and successfully.

Effective communication of workers with other workers and their employers plays a key role in the development of a company. Various sorts of interactions take place between workers in a workplace. Some of them may seem to be included in interruptions during work. In a research dealing with these interruptions, Conaill and Frohlich (1995), their results showed that "in most cases, (64%), the recipient and the initiator received some benefit from the conversation. However in just over 40% of interruptions the recipient did not resume the work they were doing prior to the interruption."
