The words “Come on Maroons” echoed through the house as my dad encouraged our team through the TV. The monster I witnessed yelling as Queensland was being slaughtered is completely different from the person I see on a day to day basis. From a kind and caring father to someone who fills your heart with fear as the New South Wales scores against Queensland.I’m sure many of you were yelling last week at the atrocious outcome for State of Origin, but this isn’t the only place we see aggression towards others.

Many young teenagers experience the aggressive and negative comments we commonly see on the sidelines. Often in sports similar to rugby, not only do the players get hyped, but the spectators and coaches as well. They yell and cheer for their team to win. Your parents give you the world and support you so that you have the best opportunities in life, but the pressure they put on you can cause a whole world of hurt. It can cause kids to feel anxious and develop mental illnesses if they believe they aren’t doing as well as their parents want them to be.

The pressure experienced causes teenagers to have low self-esteem and negative thinking. If someone were to simply compliment them, they will begin to overthink the comment and believe it was only said to have a go at them. All this negative thinking and low image can lead to suicidal thoughts. A study conducted a few years ago showed that one in five students had contemplates suicide due to the enormous pressure from parents. That’s almost one kid for every two families that feel like suicide is the only success.
Teens already experience a large amount of pressure when going through school and even after graduating. The things you say can really affect how they think and act. When something doesn’t seem to go the way you want it, simply take a deep breath and realise it isn’t the end of the
