College Is Worth The Cost Essay

In today's world many people question or education system and question whether or not the cost is of college is worth it just to continue your education. Although you inquire a lot of debt in college. Getting a degree is almost necessary in today's job market because most jobs require one and jobs that do not require a college degree are getting harder to get, as the unemployment rises. Therefore a college degree is worth incurring significant debt. Earning a college not only provides you with job security and provides potential for greater lifetime earnings.

Dale Stephens, founder of Uncollege, a social movement supporting self-directed higher education, has a very strong belief that college is a waste of time. In his opinion piece for CNN appropriately title “College is a waste of time”, Stephens shows the downsides of going to college such as the cost of it, the consequences of failing, and how it does not prepare you for the real world. The Wabash National study held a survey asking college students and graduates what they came away with out of college. With all the data they captured, the study concluded that the majority of the groups tested believe the only things they learned from school were life lessons. The fact of the matter is, although you learn life lessons throughout your experience in college, ultimately it is a waste of time because it does not help you much academically.

Many high school students all think the same question. Is college worth the money and time? People can be more successful with a college degree if they use it the right way. With a degree there is a higher percentage of getting a more premier job. In the long run, college is worth it because most jobs pay more for people with a degree, the amount of jobs available are more broad, and college graduates tend to live a healthier life.

For a nation that needs more college graduates, we seem oddly hellbent on discouraging as many people as possible from getting degrees.

While some people might still argue that a college education is not worth the investment, I believe that it is and so does William J. Lowe in “Education is Worth the Investment,” he explains the differences between a college graduate and a non college graduate. Lowe says, “Americans with four-year college degrees are not only equipped for a fulfilling adult and professional life but made 98 percent more and hour on average than those without a degree.” College graduates are more likely to be employed fulltime than non college graduates (Lowe). College teaches you so many new things and gives you a lot of opportunities, such as being independent, it allows you to growing as a person, it helps you become well educated, it shows you that there are many ways you can succeed and it helps you follow your dreams. I know that college is very expensive but I know it will help me follow my dream of becoming a pediatrician.

By having a higher level of education one will have better job opportunity and have a better pay. Going to college is worth paying money even though it does cost a lot. Once one starts heading to college, one may apply for financial aid, loans, and scholarships. College does pay off and is worth it because one will gain a lot more than what you invest. College pays off for everyone who attends and finishes for everyone for example, cashiers (Leonhardt). The pay wages go up with a college degree (Shierholz). Also, college proves it is worth it because 55% of college students say it helped them a lot to prepare for a job (Pew).

Going to college straight out of high school or returning will overall give you a better economical stance once finished with college. According to the Sociology textbook "You May Ask Yourself" those who only graduate high school will roughly make $33,176 compared to those who graduate college with a bachelor's degree will make around $54,756. That $21,580 annual salary difference seems great but that isn't including college debt if you have any. Paying $8,000 for tuition and $9,000 for fees and room and broad comes out to $17,000 a year. That $17,000 will be a lot more costing in the future due to inflation. In the next three years $17,00 will account to paying $70,023. The real question here is that is it really worth paying $17,000 for four years?

In the final years of high school, students will start to question the importance of a college education and what they think would be the best fit for them. This is a topic that everyone struggles with or even get asked about a lot. In an article called Higher Education a Worthwhile Journey by John Dever, he explains that “From a public policy perspective, the issue is whether it makes sense to continue to promote wide access to higher education. From the perspective of individual choice, the issue is whether college is worth the cost in terms of time and expense, particularly given the startling fact that student debt now exceeds what consumers owe by credit card.” Students should not be thinking about the cost of everything, but be thinking about, what they want to study in college or even what college could open their eyes to see. College offers a myriad of benefits beyond promise of a higher salary.

Although college is expensive and a risky investment, students should still go to college because there, they learn much more than just a subject or a profession. In college, not only do students learn things like liberal arts education, life skills, and other important skills needed in life, but it also gives students the experience that they need for their careers.

A 2017 research article reported that people who go to college make more money, have more opportunities for jobs, make connections with more people, and live a healthier and happier life than those with a high-school diploma. Although there are those who argue that college is not suited for everybody, and that is it a waste of time, money and effort, it is very much worth it because of the positive outcome, success and happiness.

Many students after high school are on the road to college but not really knowing what to expect or what they’re getting into. People may say college education is worth the price of admission and some may say the total opposite. College education is worth it only if you can afford it and knowing what you’re going to major in is going to be helpful for you later on in the future. Because college is not always the easy way out.

There are many opinions concerning college and if it is worth the debt and time loss during those years. There are many statistics that could sway one to either side of the debate. Theoretically speaking, there is one right answer, but it can only be decided by the person who the problem concerns. For the majority of the population, college is worth the time and money spent on education. The benefits outweigh the negatives in this case, but not all the benefits involve the money aspect; they involve parts of one’s everyday life.

For some high school graduates college might not seem beneficial compared to immediately entering the workforce. Continuing to a higher education is a choice many people have to make in their lives. They will either choose going to a college, university, or just finding a job right out of high school. Different people will have different opinions; however, if you are choosing to go to college your dreams could come true! Though college costs are on the rise, many students choose higher education directly out of high school for the enormous benefits realized while in school and after graduation.

Eighty-six percent of college graduates advocate that college was a good investment, but how so? There are many different theories to how a higher education benefits the minds of young 18 year olds. Despite the controversy, college is worth the cost because of better job opportunities it provides, higher wages, and the mental growth that comes with the responsibilities and struggle, opposed to those who bypass the adversity.

After high school students have the opportunity to attend a college. Today, it seems like fewer people go to college. People will say “It’s too expensive” or “I don’t have the time;” however, that's just not the case. In my opinion, college is worth it because if someone is seeking a long-term job with security, mobility, and pay increase they should attend college. Having a college degree is better than not having one at all.
