Today people disagree about whether going to college and getting a college degree is worth all of the hassle. To some entering the workforce out of high school is better than going to college to get the education required to do a job. The difference is in how someone was raised and what he or she believes. This is also shown in what kind of career that someone wants to do and the education required to do that job. Statistics show that people with an associates degree make one hundred twenty seven dollars more in median weekly earnings than someone with a high school diploma (Unemployment). Some argue that going to college is not required to get a good well paying job. There is truth to this argument in the form of the trades. These include jobs like construction, tile masons, and plumbers. Jobs such as these provide services for people that they typically can not do on their own. The contrary is also true. People can get a well paying job by going to college as well. Some careers from here are a graphic designer, an attorney, or a doctor. These jobs pay well, but the amount of years required to attain the certification to work in these professions is more than if you were to go to a trade school and learn a trade. Another discouraging factor is the cost of a college education compared to a trade school. Trade schools can be several thousands of dollars but come nowhere close to the price of going to a university or smaller college for several years. Another drawback is
One of the biggest complaints about a college education is the large price tag that comes with it. A national survey found that 75% of adults in the U.S. think that college is too expensive to afford, showing that a majority of the people in the U.S. agree that colleges should lower prices (Source F). As Source A says, college is about learning but the goal in life is to earn a living (Crawford). This means that while you need to earn a living, college isn’t the only route you can do so. There are careers that don’t require education beyond high school and you can still make a respectable income. It’s easy to see that not enough people realize you don’t need a college degree to get a good job.
Many jobs that one would get right out of high school are usually labor intensive or just not ideal conditions. These jobs include being the grunt worker for a construction company, working on a farm, or being a janitor. These job might not be terrible, but someone who does these would eventually become tired of their working environment. Having a college degree will typically end in having a more enjoyable job. Jobs like teaching, nursing, engineering, and accounting are all professions that require some sort of college degree and are considered nicer jobs with a better work environment. College will help students get a better job, but it will also make that student more prepared for adult
Not only do we get a lot out of getting a college degree in what we want to do, but so does our society. There are requirements for every job for a reason. Jobs need people that specialize in just that career field. They want us to be passionate about what we do and more importantly know exactly what we are doing. For example, hospitals have no room for mistakes because not only may it cost a life, it can also costs them money. We feel safer knowing people know how to do their jobs right. College education is necessary whenever there is a shortage in certain careers. It’s important to have higher education so there can be growth and competition in our society.
College may seem not seem like the best path in life but when it comes to reality, it is. One reason to prove my claim is, that you can earn more money after finishing college. According to the article, “Actually, college is very much worth it” by Andrew J. Rotherham, it shows the amount of weekly earnings a non-college
Recent high school students are debating whether to or not attend college, should consider the benefits of attaining a college degree. For many low or middle income students, this a route to gain opportunities to improve their economic circumstances. An article, “Pathways to Prosperity,” states in 2008, workers with bachelor's degree make about 65 percent higher than high school graduates and workers with associate's degree make about 73 percent more than high school dropouts.. This is evidence obtaining a college degree can be an opportunity to have earnings higher and significantly increase one's income.
While blue-collar work can be rewarding, college opens the door to many more opportunities. Many careers require higher education or even a college degree. Manual labor can be grueling and ultimately limiting to a person's future.
In Robert Farrington's article "5 Proud Alternatives to Going to College" he states, " College isn't for everyone, plain and simple" (1). He then goes on to give 5 different alternatives instead of going to college. You can become a tradesman or enter a vocational school. "Going to a vocational schooler learning a trade as an apprentice, you can start earning money while you're in school" (1). This can be very helpful to some young people because they need to be able to buy a house, car, food etc... When you finish you can end up making a decent amount of money and enjoy a almost debt free life if your not debt free already.
Daniel Ally, author of the article The 5 False Promises of College, makes it quite clear that he is not a big advocate for attending college especially if what you want to pursue does not necessarily require a degree. He expresses that students are being swindled from paying hundreds of dollars on books that takes just ten dollars to make and market as well as not being guaranteed a job when they finally graduate. He essentially is telling readers that depending on certain professions school is “highly recommended”, but for others such as entrepreneurship school is not necessary.
Going to college and receiving a degree does not guarantee that a person is going to get a job right after they graduate. It is sometimes hard for some graduates to find a good job because there is so much competition with other graduates as well. Sometimes they may get a job and it could be in a totally different field of what they got their degree for. They must find a job though to pay off all the debt that an education has given them.
Although college is not always needed for jobs, getting a degree is a great opportunity to
College can still be worth it for many people when they are deciding on their future path. College doesn’t have to be very expensive, there are many scholarships that students can apply for to help reduce the cost. Also, having a college degree will allow the person to have the option for career changes in their lifetime. Some colleges offer work co-op programs,an internship, where the person can get a degree, learn their skill, and make money. This allows them to feel more comfortable in their field, and it helps to eliminate some of their student debt. These are just a few of the reasons why college can still be very beneficial to people, and why college can still be worth it for many people.
“People that have college degrees have jobs opening today have been giving to people who know some kind of secondary school. ”(“Is College Worth It?” The Economist) Workers with a high school diploma must attain “post secondary credential if they were to compete efficiently in growing high-skill career”(“Is College Worth It?” The Economist) fields.
During college you wonder if you will get a good well-paying job after graduation. The truth is yes, studies have shown that college graduates are more likely to have good paying jobs than high school graduates. Infact 63% of jobs in America
After high school, a choice that many students have to make is whether to go to college or not. There are many factors that go into one’s decision. There are pros and cons to going to college and also there are pros and cons for not going to college. But the decision that will give someone the better opportunity to have a more successful life is to go to college. The money that one will earn after getting a college degree will be more than the money a person will make without getting a college degree. As our society has continued to evolve, education has become the optimal route to professional success: pursuing a degree is the best way to receive training, to gain expertise in a given field, and even to guide you and help you make choices
Most expect that by attending college and graduating they will be able to find a good paying career with benefits in a field that will interest them. It seems that from high school it is drilled into our heads that we must attend college to be successful in life and contribute to our society. However, college graduates often find themselves working in a field that is unrelated to their degree. This could be due to how many people are also trying to apply for jobs in that specific field, or it could be that that job does not provide them with enough money to live off. The most important thing that students really need to ask themselves before they attend college is, “is a college degree really enough in today’s world to get a good career
