Claflin University Personal Statement

I was indecisive of my future career path. My mom would tell me the classic “You should be a lawyer” or “You should be a doctor.” I would go along with her idea for a couple weeks until I jumped off the bandwagon. I wasn’t passionate about either of those fields; I was interested in both math and science and as a young girl. As I got older, I became invested in technology due to my love of gaming, but I didn’t know that people devote their lives to technology until I interned.

Being a first generation college student is something that I hold very close to my heart, growing up watching my parents struggle is what drives me to work hard and do better everyday. When I envision my future, I see a strong independent woman who works hard to give back to the community and the people that helped shape the person she is.

When you focus on a career major, you have to have a reasonable picture of what you are getting into. You have to get correct data and assess it. Numerous components go into picking a school or college major including parental or peer influence,

My life has been a struggle at times, but my thrive to succeed, determination, and enthusiasm for my education and my community has brought me to pursue my dreams.

There are many majors out there and tons to choose from. Many students in high school by now have an idea on what they’re interested on becoming. So far, I have no clue on what I want to study, but I do have a picture of it. Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make in your life. Because of that you have to choose very carefully and make sure whatever you choose will suite you. Whether it’s from engineering or going into the medical field, they all take time. Here I have chosen 5 careers that I myself am very interested on studying after high school.

I had no idea what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life. All my friends knew exactly what they wanted to be nurse, cop, mechanic, firefighter, and even a surgeon. But me, no I was so baffled on so many choices that I could not make up my mind. Due to me loving to help others I strongly considered being a Nurse so I could help elderly,

One of the many issues I faced as a collage student was choosing the correct major. I did not know what I wanted to accomplish after collage once I entered the work force. I had always seen myself in business somewhere but I never had a revelation on which major was the best for me. I realized that I needed some direction to my life and that I couldn’t get through collage without choosing a career path to take.

When I was in high school, I had no clue what I wanted to be when I grow up. My parents encouraged me to look at being a doctor or engineer but I wasn’t too sure. I knew two things for sure at this young age; that I loved sports, especially football, and interacting with people. It was not until my sophomore year that I found what I am passionate about even though it came at one of the saddest time in my life.

I never wanted to be one of those people who freak out senior year about college and careers because I can remember always hearing the seniors at the time freaking out since they did not know what they wanted to go to college for and some didn’t even know what college to go to. During my sophomore year in high school was when I realized that I should start figuring out what I want to do with my life. Throughout the years on deciding majors and colleges there have been some great and no so great times.

Education has been my main goal growing up, from family telling me to be the first person to get a degree, to teachers throughout my 12 years of school pushing me and preparing me for the next level. As I got closer to which college to pick for college, personal problems came into effect and I decided to stay in town and attend Piedmont Virginia Community College. Being out of school for almost two years and working so many hours and jobs made me realize I could be in school working towards a degree and only working one job.

The reason I chose the field that I am in today, is because when I was in high school I had no idea what I wanted to be. I just wanted out of my normal classes and found a way to do so. At my High school we had a career center and none of the programs caught my eye until it I saw computer maintenance. I went in with the mindset that this course was going to just be another easy typing class, but on our first day our instructor clearly told us that this is going to be the hardest class you will ever take in high school and that if you were here to goof off you got two weeks to change classes. Within those two weeks we went over course safety and our syllabus. The course caught my attention I really wanted to see what it had to offer and

I spoke with my parents about my future career and at first they were not supportive of engineering. They never had any family member that completed engineering so they were apprehensive on if I would like it. They wanted me to go to the medical field even though I did not like it as much. I made an agreement with them that if I took college level biology in high school and I enjoyed it I would go into

When I began college, I was undecided about what to study. Initially, I enrolled as Biology major. I majored in biology for three years of my college career. Because

I plan to work in a setting that focuses around adolescents, either in an alcohol and drug facility or an organization that deals with promoting healthier life styles and habits. I hope to start my own business after I graduate. I am looking to start it a year after I graduate. I plan to start my company and work a full time job until I get my company is fully functioning. The company will focus around fitness and wellness. I have some very ambitious goals after I finish in May that will require a lot of me and intense hours.

Life is full of opportunities, so my motto is "Why not chase them and be the best you can be". Motivational and creative are two words that describe me. I will graduate next year with an Associate in Applied Science and then plan to get a cosmetology license at Paul Mitchell in Columbia, South Carolina. I grew up in a small, quiet community in Hopkins, South Carolina. It is safe to say, I have a peaceful soul for my age.
