It seemed as though black people were finally starting to be recognized as actual people. According to the article “Reconstruction” on the website ushistory.org it says, “Under federal bayonets,blacks, including those who had recently been freed, received the right to vote, hold political offices, and become judges and police chiefs.” African Americans were finally able to hold some type of power in political offices and could have jobs of importance, however, many Southerners were angered by black people having this new sense of freedom. From the same article it says, “Many Southern whites could not accept the idea that former slaves could not only vote but hold office. It was this era that the Ku Klux Klan was born.” Douglass’s dream of equality was starting to slip away with white supremacists discriminating against black people. To this day, there is still racism and discrimination among not only African Americans but all races and this goal of equality has yet to be reached and may not be achieved ever.

During the time period of 1860 and 1877 many major changes occurred. From the beginning of the civil war to the fall of the reconstruction, the United States changed dramatically. Nearly one hundred years after the Declaration of Independence which declared all men equal, many social and constitutional alterations were necessary to protect the rights of all people, no matter their race. These social and constitutional developments that were made during 1860 to 1877 were so drastic it could be called a revolution.

At the end of the Civil War slavery was outlawed by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and the blacks was finally free. In the South there was a sense of anger and shame in losing the war. The Reconstruction era was put into effect by Congress in 1866 and lasted until 1877. Reconstruction was aimed at reorganizing the Southern states after the Civil War. The reconstruction plan granted the means for readmitting the southern states into the Union, and tried to come up with the methods by which whites and blacks could live together in a non-slave society. However during reconstruction the United States government took actions to protect freedman and with each action the south countered with actions that would try to eradicate the laws put in place by the winning northern forces for example, the infamous Jim Crow Laws. The law segregated the whites and the blacks, thus can be commonly heard as “separate is not equal.” The Reconstruction was still seen as a success towards the United States as a whole in many ways as it unified the nations.

The Civil war could very easily be known as one of the greatest tragedies in United States history. After the Civil War, the people of The United States had so much anger and hatred towards each other and the government that 11 Southern states seceded from the Nation and parted into two pieces. The Nation split into either the Northern abolitionist or the Southern planation farmers. The Reconstruction era was meant to be exactly how the name announces it to be. It was a time for the United States to fix the broken pieces the war had caused allowing the country to mend together and unite once again. The point of Reconstruction was to establish unity between the states and to also create and protect the civil rights of the former slaves.

The period after the Civil War was a very difficult time in the United States' history. This time was known as the Reconstruction period and it was a very controversial time. There were many issues that had to be addressed such as what to do with the free blacks in the south and how states would be readmitted to the Union. This era saw the rise of the Radical Republicans. The government was going through changes, southerners were going through changes, and blacks were going through changes. Whites in the south were left without people to work their plantations. In hindsight it is sometimes claimed that Reconstruction was a failure. Although there was some good that came out of the Reconstruction it was mostly just a relentless uphill battle against Southerners and immoral politicians that were here to delay change and keep racism alive. Reconstruction brought the Ku Klux Klan who displayed great resistance, and poverty that swept the South once the blacks were freed. The freedom of these black slaves led to discriminatory legislatures such as the Black Codes and the Jim Crow laws to keep the blacks constrained from actually being free. The South was then encountered with corruption and high property taxes, as a rebuild was in order to reestablish the war torn part of the nation.

The end of civil war in the United States of America brought about many problems, in particular for the South. Some of the problems were political, economic decay and social disorder. The war destroyed the plantations and crops thus causing many to starve to death while others became homeless. The reconstruction became the only hope for the people. Radical reconstruction began in 1867, which enabled the freed black men to have a voice in the government. Before the civil war, the Southern state had enacted laws that suppressed all African American. This fact angered many people from the North who were seeking to end slavery. Therefore, during the reconstruction era, the black people wanted their voices to be heard.

African Americans were not able to do much during the time of reconstruction. In fact, the Black Codes were assembled which were a set of laws that restricted the rights of African Americans. During this time period slavery had just ended but the rights for the blacks were still seldom. After the civil war and the period of reconstruction during the 20th century, many economic, social and political conditions changed for African Americans. This new freedom and opportunities given to them were not dramatically a big change. Even though the civil war had ended African Americans still faced discrimination and didn’t get as promised. One social change that came out of the civil war and reconstruction was segregation between the two races it was the process of separating the black people from the white. As shown in document 6, we see the public drinking fountain in North Carolina are kept separate from the white.

The Civil War was the bloodiest battle the US has ever never had that reconstruction it took a very long time. 1876 was the year of the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence . 1877 the last federal troops left the South. I believe the north killed Reconstruction because they did not do anything to stop racism, they had the Panic of 1873 and public opinion shifted about reconstruction the Civil War.

Over 150 years ago, the slaves were proclaimed free by President Lincoln. However many people even today still consider the african-americans under the bindings of slavery and barred from true freedom. The african-american slaves were brought to America while it was still being colonized to replace the rather expensive indentured servants. They were sold into slavery to carry out often harsh chores and tasks for their owner. Eventually, a civil war broke out between the north and south over the south not wanting slavery to be abolished. However, the south lost and President Lincoln established the Emancipation Proclamation, which completely freed the slaves. The period following the civil war, known as reconstruction, was a failure due to the fact that the newly freed slaves still experienced inequality, racism, and exclusion.

Imagine being beaten for the color of your skin or even worse killed for trying to do something simple like voting.Before the reconstruction era began, Civil War had ended on April 9th, 1865, slavery was abolished and our 16th president was assassinated 5 days after the Civil War. The Civil War was started on April 12, 1861 by the confederates who were trying to protect the southern society which were things like economically depending on slaves and politically being white supremacist by attacking a Union fort. Once the Civil War ended slavery was abolished and the Reconstruction era began. The Reconstruction was the time when citizenship rights of freedmen were being established and protected. Its effect led slavery to come to an end and have the South accept the 14th amendment which stated that everyone had equal rights including the former slaves. Due to the success and failures of Reconstruction, although the social impact was positive for newly-freed African Americans because slavery came to an end, the impacts were mostly negative politically and economically because african americans were not able to vote and no laws protected them from the Ku Klux Klan and the jobs were scarce and usually did not pay much.

After the Civil War, which lasted from 1861-1865, there were three different approaches to southern reconstruction. The Lincoln Plan, as outlined by Abraham Lincoln before his death, would: (1) improve the economic and political status of blacks (2) allow southern states to re-enter the Union after 10% of whites had taken oaths of loyalty (3) grant blanket pardons to Confederate veterans after individual pleas to the president, and (4) not allow a loss of property except slaves. At the time, Lincoln’s primary objective was to end the war and bring southern states back into the Union. Ultimately, his dream of abolishing slavery was realized with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863; however, his long term goal of rebuilding the South was put to a halt after his assassination, and successor Andrew Johnson.

The largest threat to African Americans with after the Civil War and Reconstruction was the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK was founded in 1866, and extended into almost every southern state by 1870. The organization became a vehicle for white southern citizens to deny Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies whose ideas, that tried establishing political and economic equality for African Americans. The KKK flourished in some regions in the South where, African Americans were a minority of the population. The KKK also targeted any individual or organization that would support minatory groups.
