What Caused the Civil War? Many people think that the Civil War was fought only because of slavery. Could other things have contributed to the cause of war? The Civil War was a four year battle between the Union and the Confederacy. There were many events that may have helped lead America in the war. These events include: economic issues, cultural and social issues, and political issues. The first cause of the Civil War were economic issues. The south, not being as industrialized as the north, couldn’t make their own basic supplies. Therefore, they had to rely on the north. The only thing the could trade in exchange for supplies was cotton (Document 1). The south also relied on their slaves for income. The cotton that was grown was picked by the slaves. This slave-picked cotton was the only thing that really made them money (Document 3). Overall, the north was far more advanced than the south. They didn’t rely on anyone else, like the south relied on them. The only thing the south was superior at was slave population and cotton bales (Document 2). Independence Day has been a very celebrated American holiday for many years. However, in the 1800s, we enslaved our own people. As “the land of the free” (a lyric in our nation anthem), abolitionists wanted America to be true to that title and rid of slavery (Document 4). The hit novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, painted a clear picture of how cruel slavery really was. This enraged the south, making statements such as “The Negro slaves of the South are the happiest, and, in some sense, the freest people in the world,” (Document 5).
