Organisational barriers can be unclear structures so adults do not know who to communicate with, inefficient communication systems and lack of clarification of what each persons job role is within the setting. Attitudinal barriers are conflicts between adults, lack of consultation, lack of motivation or positive attitude to work or different views about practice. Personal barriers are adults with personal problems such as relationship issues, health issues such as depression and close friendships among colleagues. Being able to communicate effectively builds trust, respect, enhances learning and accomplishes goals. Within my job role the level of communication I have to uphold has to be one of paramount importance. I have a role of great responsibility dealing with clients and their families or advocates, internal staff and external agencies. Staff Communication barriers could also be caused due to staff not feeling able to approach myself or a fellow colleague as they feel their opinions will not be taken into consideration or feel in the past this has been the case. They may choose to confide in one member of the management team as they feel they get a more positive response which could result in animosity and conflict amongst the managers as they would feel their advice is not valued as much.

A critical first step in engaging diverse families is to focus on building relationships of mutual trust, confidence, and respect.
