Chapter 1: 18 Years Later... Sethe and her daughter Denver live in a house 124 that just happens to be haunted by the ghost of Sethe's first child. She invites Paul D a man she hasn't seen in 18 years into her house to talk. Paul D always had liked Sethe. She was sent there to replace Baby Suggs whose son, Halle, Sethe's husband brought her freedom. Sethe and Denver start to talk about Sweet Home and she tells him about her scar and how it looks like a tree and he caresses her and starts to kiss her scars. When he began doing this the ghost of the house gets angry and begans to shake but eventually Paul D. scares the ghost away. Then she began to speak of a world with no room to move, rats that attack you can, bodies piled up, and men without skin. The she starts to see Sethe's face through water and she doesn't want to lose her. She wants to rejoin Sethe. Chapter 23: You are Ours Denver tries to warn Beloved of Sethe but Beloved still feeds the need to have Sethe's face. She wants to be one with her. Beloved says that Sethe was about to smile at her when the men without skin came but she lost her. She doesn't want to ever lose Sethe again. The voices start to mix but it ends by telling Beloved she won't be left again. Chapter 24: Church Steps Paul D sits on the church steps feeling a little vulnerable. His tin heart has been open leaving him to think about life at Sweet Home. He thinks about how Mr.Garner called them men, but they were not treated like it. He also thinks about when he first experience what its like to experience brutal hardship, when he went to the labor farm.
