Business Ethics has been difficult for me. I have not had any background in business and so learning the vocabulary was definitely a challenge. The course as a whole has many different parts. The lecture and notes as well as the case readings. The case readings tied all of the vocabulary together and helped me to put the information we have learned into a real life scenario. Overall, Business Ethics has been a great way for me to learn about different companies. I also believe this course helped me to look behind the scenes at the layers of business, and overall the course gave me a better knowledge and understanding of business as a whole. I have never taken a business class before, and to be honest, I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this particular course. The vocabulary was all very new to me as were a lot of the concepts. I had to really digest each slide on my own and break down a lot of the vocabulary that other students might have known due to a background in business. This class did enhance my knowledge of business and business ethics. I wouldn’t necessarily say the course changed my view on business, as I didn’t really have a view. The course did give me a view on business, that I now have. I think it was important for me to take this course because I will benefit from knowing more about business ethics, and also business in general. One of my favorite parts of the course was reading all the different cases. I found the cases really helped me
Employee/ Employer expectations, Employee appreciation/ respect, job safety training/practices. As well as well written company policies and procedures.
Offering business ethics as a stand-alone ethics course or integrating it across the curriculum has sparked much debate. Henderson (1988) believed that offering courses solely devoted to business ethics sends a more powerful message. Also, Weber (1990) identified, in a national survey of graduate and undergraduate students that fifty three percent of students prefer to have a separate course in ethics. However, from most researcher’s point of view it was found that they favored integration as the superior mode of introducing students to ethical training, since it provides for a wider variety of ethical experiences in the course of the training and thus reflects the variety of ethical situations which an accountant might meet in
When I entered this class I did not know anything about ethics or what it meant. I learned so many thing that it would take to long to list them all. I do understand the Ethics Code and the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals. That is one think I will have to always have with me and if I need to have a cheat sheet to look back on as I move forward. My biggest challenge was my grammar as I need to continue to work on this through out my life. I learned this was a problem for me through my assignments but am working on it. I hope some day it will come natural for me. This class was my biggest challenge as in terms of a grade. Because of this I learned that I have things to work on to improve myself moving forward.
Ethics and moral obligations are issues we all encounter at one time or another. In the professional setting, all people should act in a manner that would uphold the good of society. To be ethical, one has to determine their obligations, moral ideas, and moral philosophy (Boatright, p. 19, 2009). The case analysis involving Jacob Franklin was a perfect example of how an individual can face the dilemma of doing what is right or wrong. Businesses have their own code of ethics, and the employees within the business have to determine whether or not they will follow the company’s code of conduct. I will discuss several ethical issues in the case analysis including; failure to report information, remaining silent regarding faulty equipment,
What is principle of justice in acquisition? Our book gives us an analogy concerning basketball player, Wilt Chamberlain that was used by Nozick. The idea
Being a business major, most of our class are either learning the ethics and being civil in business from being managers to CEO’s, or tips on how to look at financial statements and balance sheets all day without being bored. However, it also shows us the civility and incivility side of business through some courses which revolve around managing. My concentration is management, and most of the classes I have taken show how being a manager can either go civil or uncivil, depending on how you lead your company and employees. One of these classes, fundamentals of management, taught by Dr. Nadia Novotorova, has shown a lot on how civility and incivility can change the way your company works in numerous ways.
Mentioning about business classes, students may think about finance, marketing, accounting, management and so on. However, ethics class is designed for all business students to understand about ethics and how to do moral business. The article Can We Teach Character? An Aristotelian Answer by Edwin M. Hartman explains the principle of ethics and how the schools can teach their business students good characters. The author emphasizes on the Aristotle’s principles of well-being and ethics and how to apply these principles to real life.
According to Wikipedia, ethics, also known as “moral philosophy”, is a branch of philosophy that addresses questions about morality. Concepts such as good and bad, noble, right and wrong, justice and virtue. To business, ethics is a tool to examine principles and moral or ethical problems that arise in a business environment. Therefore, business ethics can be both a normative and a descriptive discipline. Ethics is a part of the larger social ethics, and also always affect business development. In other words, business ethics is a factor of determining the fundamental purposes of a company. Marketing ethics is a subset of business ethics. Because in marketing, ethics deals with the principles, values and ideas by marketers; it shows how
In everyday life, whether it is in the workplace or personal life, people have a certain level of ethics that is expected. This course has influenced me to be more aware of how we deal with people and their problem. I think that the body of Christ has not taken seriously the professional and legal ethic of Christianity. We look at it from the secular world or the work places, but not our personal lives and or neither do we incorporate it in our churches properly. Ethics is about knowing and doing what is good or right, for the Christian, this means applying the Bible and other resources of the Christian faith to help decide and do what is ethically or morally right.
Some of the things I have taken away from this course are a better understanding of ethical theories, laws, regulations, and policies. I am also more capable of applying the decision-making framework to analyze alternatives to ensure compliance with organizational ethical standards. In the second week of class we performed a matrix mapping of an IT related ethical issue. We learned about normative ethical theories and methods for ethical analysis. In week two we applied what we learned by creating a policy to address the ethical issue we focused on in week two. Week four consisted of performing extensive research of a specific technology and we began gathering information as it related the associated ethical issues. We discussed responsibility, liability and laws as they relate to these ethical issues.
2. Ethical Issues in Business. It seems that every day in the news we are hearing of new company that has acted at least unethically and possibly illegally in the operation and financial reporting of their company's business dealings. There are many ethical issues in business. One major issue that we see is over and under reporting net income. Companies like to show that every quarter the net income of the business has an increase or profit. In order to show this they adopt unethical or illegal means in the operation and financial reporting. One such method is the indiscriminate use of stock options for employees that enable companies to take employment costs off balance sheet and inflate earnings. With the recent ethical issues we have
The one thing I hope I will not forget from this class are the ethical theories of universalism and utilitarianism. The survey of ethical theoretic aptitude stated that I had a +5 score which follows under the “flaming utilitarianism” category. The survey reveals that I tend to lean towards looking at ethical decisions in a costs and benefits analysis way. It also revealed, I tend to place a great value on how others are affected my action. I think for me to get a full understand if the business decision I am weighing is ethical or not, I need to also look at the issue from a universalism point of view in addition to the customary utilitarianism way I approach the situation. Before this class, I was unaware how often I look at ethical decisions
The course helped me to analyze different perspectives of a variety of situations. Situations all have pros and cons that everyone must consider prior to making an ethical decision. It also helped me to identify the theories effecting my life.
Ethics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the principles correlated to human behavior concerning the rightness and wrongness of specific conduct, and to the good and bad that influences and ends those actions (Ditonary.com, 2011). In other words, ethics is the choice people effect in regards to a decision they need to achieve. Without ethics directing the choice an individual makes, moral preferences of what should or should not be done becomes irrelevant. While ethical decisions are made every day there are two different regions in which these choices are made.
I have learned a lot from Business Ethics both professionally and personally. I am a very spiritual person to begin with so I knew from the time I signed up that I would enjoy this class. One of the things I liked the most was Cases and Ethical Queries. Through those two exercises I was able to view other people's opinions on some very important issues. It has definitely helped me to see why our society is struggling with ethical issues. It also makes me ask "how did we let it get this far?" I think through this class I have found the answer. I believe it is because we, Pakistanis, have no absolute authority. That is why some of my fellow students answered some of the questions that pertained to whether a certain issue is right or wrong as it would depend on the situation or they would never want to be known as the whistle blower. I don't believe that there are any gray areas. Stealing is wrong no matter the situation or what the person has stolen. Society today tells us that there are these gray areas, but that is only used to make excuses for our wrongs because let's face it no one wants to be wrong.
